Another side to The Circle

This is a guest post by Jag Lall about an album that has had somewhat mixed reviews among Bon Jovi fans since its release in 2009. Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Throughout Bon Jovi’s career there have always been songs which harked to a wider socially conscious level (‘Keep the Faith’, ‘Dry County’, ‘All I Want Is Everything’); however the torn side which they so effortlessly displayed in the Keep the Faith and These Days albums has only surfaced sparingly in recent years. Compared to several previous efforts The Circle has darker tones and socially conscious subject matter sweeping right across the record. There seems to be a real acceptance of the band to show their emotions of hurt and longing far more readily. Also, there is a sense of realism, maturity and perspective running right through the album where even upbeat anthems such as ‘We Weren’t Born to Follow’ proclaim not to give up but also don’t live in some fantasy either.

‘I’ve learned to pray but it’s too late now’

From the bleak angst of ‘Bullet’ to the inner look of ‘Thorn in my Side’, Bon Jovi created The Circle as almost a scrapbook of the world they see and feel. ’Bullet’s chorus questions faith in humanity ‘God are you listening or have You just given up?’ The song makes us look at ourselves, have we as a humanity pulled the trigger and spilt blood so many times that even God has had enough? The anger and puzzlement also comes out in the line ‘How can someone take a life in the name of God and say it’s right’. The song’s lyrics carry a feeling of hopelessness and being unable to comprehend the endless bloodshed which engulfs society today. In contrast, ‘Happy Now’ shows a more hopeful slant, no doubt bloomed from Jon’s involvement with President Obama but ‘When we were Beautiful’ is a social and political postcard from the era of where Jon longs the world to get back to. The lyrics paint a very deliberate picture of a muddled reality soaked in doubt, ‘Am I blessed or am I cursed cos the way we are ain’t the way we were’. Lyrically the track delves deeper than most on the album and takes the listener on a journey of yearning, despair and reflection.

‘If somebody sent you an angel to save you, what would you tell him to turn him away’

The sense of longing continues and is felt in ‘Superman Tonight’. Masked by soaring guitars the song is tinged with a sense of pain of not being able to pull someone out of their darkness. The Superman logo has become part of Jon’s identity but here he uses that strength as a wishful hope because he realises that there is no Superman, no ultimate hero or saviour. The narration has a feel of defeat and of not being strong enough to save those most dear to them which is a far cry from the anthemic power ballads of ‘I’ll Be There For You’ and ‘In These Arms’. The lyrical spike of hurt and loss only truly came to the fore when the band performed this acoustically on the The Circle/Greatest Hits tour where the song’s words elevated above the studio version.
The sense of identifying one’s limitations bounces right across the album. In ‘Work for the Working Man’ the poignant lyric ‘I only know what I know how to do’ is a heart wrenching line because it manages to convey both a sense of pride and helplessness. The undercurrent of realism and limitations occurs in ‘Fast Cars’ too, ‘How can I defend let’s live for now but not then’. It’s a song where Jon and Richie try to find a sense of personal freedom while dealing with life’s failings and hardships without pretending to make believe.

‘You leave it all on the table if lose or you win’

Although the likes of ‘Work for the Working Man’ and ‘Bullet’ are sources of social commentary, the band’s more personal emotions come to the fore in ‘Learn to Love’. Here, the song touches on the subject of mortality which shows flashes of Bon Jovi’s willingness to display emotional vulnerability and ultimately, acceptance. ‘Learn to Love’ deals with finding that resolution in our own actions and having the willingness to let go of the regret of our past mistakes so that we can find compassion and forgiveness for who we are and for the tracks that we have laid. Whilst the chorus is penned as ‘you gotta learn to love the world your living in’, the ‘world’ is your own heart and soul, that lyric points itself directly to the listener, learn to love who you are. In many ways this song best reflects where mentally the band are right now as swashbuckling enthusiasm and wide eyed wonder has blended into resolution, contentment and drive. The band rarely touches the subject of life and death but it’s this extra layer in their song writing which is untapped. It has been touched upon by Jon himself that the These Days record contained many songs which were too personal to play live and showed his fragility and thus prefer not to perform such cuts such as ‘Hard Letting You Go’, ‘Something to Believe In’. However on The Circle/GH tour the band performed more songs from that album than the past few tours combined. Perhaps this is a sign that Bon Jovi are becoming more comfortable and willing to bare their soul and heartache on stage.

There is no denying that The Circle is a social glimpse of the murky times we live in; economic crisis to wars and revolutions but underneath that subject matter lays a light that shines on the personal growth of a band who have learned to love and live with who they are, albeit with a thorn in their side.

How do you rate The Circle?

Videos from Vienna

Here's a selection of videos from Bon Jovi's recent concert in Vienna (July 22, 2011).

Have a Nice Day

Some fans seemed a bit shocked at Jon flashing his middle finger about 2:03 into the video, even though Richie Sambora's been known to flip the bird during this song. :P

Thorn In My Side

I can't help but laugh at how deep in concentration Jon looks compared to Richie during the (still awesome) twin solo. I know I say this every time they play Thorn, but they really should play it more.

Helsinki videos: Thorn In My Side, Wild is the Wind

I've posted videos of Jon injuring himself at this show but here are a couple of other videos from Bon Jovi's June 17 Helsinki concert.

I wish Thorn In My Side had been staple on The Circle Tour.

Wild is the Wind was played two nights in a row (It also got an outing in Oslo). This time it's raining quite heavily and Jon doesn't stink-eye anyone. ;)

Videos from Uncasville: A Day for Diehards

First up, I'd like to apologise for being late with these; blame it on a combination of work and, in the last couple of days, being unable to login to the Blogger dashboard from my usual browser. I'm typing this from IE right now, which is not something I like to do by choice. :P

Anyway, I promised a video showcase and it's time to deliver. I'm glad there's this break in the tour at the moment or I'd be even further behind. ;) Without further ado, here's a bunch of videos from Bon Jovi's amazing set in Uncasville on March 4, 2010.

The Radio Saved My Life Tonight

Surprising choice for opener, but I dig the song.

Thorn In My Side

The twin solo at the end just takes the song to another level every time. Sure, I'm biased because I loved The Circle from the start, but it's the live performances of "Thorn", along with "Love's the Only Rule", that convinced me that Jon gave up on the album way too easily.

Wild in the Streets

Some people were just about bursting blood vessels over the decision to let Bobby Bandiera take the solo on this. Thoughts?

I Got The Girl

This song is roundly hated but I don't mind it... Crush isn't a favourite album of mine, but when I think about it, there are really only two songs on it that I particularly dislike and this isn't one of them. I enjoyed the little jam at the end too.

In These Arms (David Bryan vox)

I ALWAYS love hearing Dave sing.

Superman Tonight (acoustic)

I absolutely adore the unplugged version of this. The touch of violin from special guest Lorenza Ponce worked nicely here.

Living in Sin

Ah, the forgotten New Jersey hit (it was one of five top 10 hits from that album, and the only one that didn't make the recent Greatest Hits).

Hey God

This was my favourite song at one point. It's now slipped down the list a bit but it's still comfortably in my top 10, so it's always great to see this pop up in a set.

Videos: Reclaiming The Circle in Sydney

As you may have already heard/read, Bon Jovi's three-night stand in Sydney was out of this world from a diehard's perspective, especially the second and third nights. I've been falling over myself trying to figure out what to showcase and how to split the posts up. And given Bon Jovi finally realised that this is The Circle tour, I thought some songs from that album that haven't been played that often might be a good place to start.

Happy Now (Night #3: December 19, 2010)- One of the best songs from The Circle (IMHO of course). I loved it when they used to open shows with this but I think it still works later in the set.

Thorn In My Side (Night #3: December 19, 2010) - Not one of my favourites on the album, but I've always liked it live, especially the twin jam session between JBJ and Richie Sambora at the end... although you can tell which one is the truly comfortable guitarist, haha.

Love's the Only Rule (Night #2: December 18, 2010) - Of all The Circle tracks, this is the one that "grows" the most live. Should have been a single.

I'd Die For You (partial) + Superman Tonight (Night #2: December 18, 2010) - I still think "Superman" could have done better with smarter promotion, but I guess it's a dead horse now.

More videos to come. Also check out Hath's Circle Tour blog for vids.

Videos from London (O2#6-8)

Some videos from June 17-20 of Bon Jovi's residency at the O2 arena.

THORN IN MY SIDE (Night #6: June 17, 2010) - This deserves a run every night of the Circle Tour. It really comes into its own live, and the twin solo/jam session at the end of the song is awesome. (Cheers to Jay for sending me the link to this video).

WILD IN THE STREETS (Night #7: June 19, 2010) - That was fun! I'd forgotten how much I actually like this song.

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT (Night #7: June 19, 2010) - An incredible performance, which includes some ad lib references to "Something to Believe In"

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN (Night #7: June 19, 2010) - Speaking of which... how about ANOTHER video of this? :P

SQUEEZE BOX (Night #8: June 20, 2010)- A closer video of this cool acoustic cover.

San Jose videos + Thorn In My Side from Seattle

A few videos from the San Jose show. You can read the full set list here.

"This Is Our House" plays while the crowd waits for the band to come on, then about half of "Blood on "Blood" is captured in this video. It's pretty awesome, kind of like watching Stargate. :P

KEEP THE FAITH (partial) - Played for the first time this tour. Would have been cool to get the jungle sound effects. ;)

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT - Ok, I admit it, I'm biased towards this song. And I happen to love it acoustic.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE - The "national anthem".

Hath & Co have a full video guide up on their Circle Tour Blog.

I also decided to include this vid of "Thorn In My Side". It's from the second show in Seattle but they also played it at the start of the encore in the first Seattle show, and again in San Jose. Love the twin solo/jam session Jon and Richie indulge in at the end of the song. That's the way live music should be.

More Honolulu videos

Happy Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year, readers and friends. What better way to celebrate than... more videos from the past two Bon Jovi shows in Hawaii? ;)

A couple of new songs...

WHEN WE WERE BEAUTIFUL

THORN IN MY SIDE

I'm loving The Circle more and more.

And a couple we've seen before, but slightly different...

WE GOT IT GOING ON - It's no secret that I think this is a terrible track but if it was written to be a mindless "party" song, it succeeded. Jon seems to have a lot of fun with it. And from about 2:05 onwards, Richie starts saying "We Got It Going On" with the talk box which is actually pretty cool.

YOU GIVE LOVE A BAD NAME - Jon on the guitar... playing a solo that consists of more than two notes... What on earth is the world coming to? :P

Jon talks about new songs in BURRN Magazine

Thanks to TokyoRockChick for the tweets and e-mail. The article is in Japanese so she has translated Jon's words into English. Great effort... yokuyatta! :D

Superman Tonight
This would be the most Boy-Girl song.
There was a girl, I watched her from far away, but I was powerless.
She's like a pinball machine in a way, rolled over many guys.
She's very beautiful & smart, however, she thought that it would be much more happy if she could have a little more confidence.
This song is a kind of observation diary. And Im a fly on a wall.

Broken Promise Land
I sing about the state that the personal world collapses. There is a guy I know who has no luck badly.
Everything does not go well, the stock, business, buying and selling of the house, kid's school... He is late 40s.
He works but its not profitable and he does not even enjoy it.
He wants to find his way again (rediscover himself) soon but its not easy.
Its difficult to give up everything you got now and start over again from zero (a brand-new life).
People like him are the chief characters of the story. But its the reality Ive seen.
He left NY and started his new life which was sober in an unknown land.
But he had lived in the era of dreams and hopes in 20s-30s, so it makes him wonder why he is here now.
They are divided into "successful man" and "No successful man" in late 40s.
And they notice the severe reality, that the life he had is much longer than the life he will have ahead.
"What have I really achieved?" I know lots of people who think like that.
Its not too late, but this is a sort of test if we can stay who we are, when we look at ourselves in the mirror.

Happy Now
I wrote this lyrics on the next day of the presidential election.
Are we going to be happy at last? Can we take a break?
"What would you say if I talk about my dream? You might say just sleep again? Look at my tired eyes, but at last my life is back.
Maybe I can change something. Hope runs through my vein. I wont back to pain." - the lyrics is like that.
"Pain" means 8 years till then. "Are we going to be happy at last?" I wrote this kind of lyrics right after the new President was born.
Its just one year ago. Tell the truth, I was concerned if we really needed to find an answer "Yes" or "No".
But its not timely. Now its time to be judged if the promises were real thing.

Fast Cars
This is also about me. I took a holiday with Richie in spring. Desmond Child was also there,
We're on the beach in Saint Barts island & talked about similar subject like now, "What is the legend? Is it to let go? Or is it to make?"
The story is there're drivers who always follow taillights, on the other hand, there're ppl who drive at their pace & go their own way.
I mean, lets go on our own roads forever! In this album, there are lots of similar themes as I hate to follow someone.
I at last got a position to be able to say like that, but so many people are stuck in the same trap, they are scared of change.

Thorn In My Side
This is the song that I wrote with Richie in the beginning. I wrote it almost before I met him.
I want something worthwhile after I wake up every morning. I got here with such a long career, still Im not satisfied,
I want to be bigger and work more. I want to complain to guys who complain.
I just live my life in the way I am everyday, though. I sometimes have to accept the reality, such as wrinkles around my eyes. LOL!
The thorn is a kind of motivation.
Obviously the two languages don't directly correlate but you can get the gist of it. Just think... in roughly a month's time, we'll have this record in our hot little hands.
