New musical project for David Bryan

David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, who have collaborated on Memphis and The Toxic Avenger are reportedly working on their next musical, currently entitled Chasing the Song. According to DiPietro, it's "about songwriters in the early 1960s at the time period prior to the Beatles emerging and changing everything".

You can read more about the new musical on Playbill.com.

Playbill.com also revealed that Memphis is set to be made into a film after receiving "serious offers from big Oscar winners". DiPietro expects an official announcement in the next couple of months.

Read about it here.

A movie! Well done, Dave! Being in the wrong country, I've never seen Memphis but it sounds like the type of musical I'd want to see even if David Bryan hadn't been involved in it. Not to mention it features a great soundtrack.

Videos from Charlotte

Some videos from Bon Jovi's April 22 concert in Charlotte.

I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU - I was watching this with the silliest lovestruck grin on my face... Jon's voice might be the strongest it's been all tour here. So, what do you say, boys... time to try some tracks from the first two albums again? ;)

DIAMOND RING - There's always something magical about Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, one mic stand and this song.

BAD CASE OF LOVING YOU (DOCTOR, DOCTOR) / BAD MEDICINE reprisal

HALLELUJAH - I really enjoyed David Bryan's keys from about 3:45 to 4:02. I don't think this song needs to be played every night, but I do really like seeing Bon Jovi covering it.

LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME - I miss "Homebound Train" but Richie does rock on this too.

SUPERMAN TONIGHT - I figured I'd include this one since I think we're all supposed to be voting for it on VH1. :P

Bon Jovi's next show is May 19 in Pennsylvania.

Jon Bon Jovi visits Nasvhille homeless centre + Blog from the Tampa protest

Here's an article about Jon's visit to the Oasis Center for homeless teens in Nashville:
Rock star Jon Bon Jovi traded thousands of cheering fans Wednesday night for a quiet circle with a few kids Thursday afternoon.

The singer visited the Oasis Center, Nashville's only shelter for homeless teens, as part of his effort to understand what he calls "the new face of homelessness in America."

"The Oasis Center is really a beacon to youth," Bon Jovi said. "Having service providers at the same place that they can get a hot meal, a nap and a shower, it's a very welcoming place."

Bon Jovi spent about an hour with some of the Oasis kids. He sat in a circle with them, did yoga just as they do to start off a session, then listened to kids talk about what made them homeless and what could help them escape their condition.

I also came across the blog of a student journalist who covered the Westboro Baptist Church's protest at Bon Jovi's Tampa concert. You can read about it at this link.

Jon Bon Jovi's Superman deal

Sort of a follow-up from Jon's plea for more "Superman Tonight" airplay.

In a video posted on Facebook today, Jon thanks fans for getting "Superman" to #4 on VH1 and promises that he and Richie Sambora will perform an acoustic version in the dressing room if it gets to #1.

Bon Jovi special edition albums to be released

According to this media release, Bon Jovi's first 10 albums are set to be re-released next month with live bonus tracks:
On May 11, Bon Jovi will re-release their classic studio albums as Special Editions. Each of the band's first 10 albums – Bon Jovi, 7800 Fahrenheit, Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Keep The Faith, These Days, Crush, Bounce, Have A Nice Day and Lost Highway – will feature the original studio album tracks plus era-specific live recordings included as bonus tracks.

The bonus live tracks include songs taken from sound checks and concerts held in venues from all over the world, ranging from 500 seat theatres to massive football stadiums. Many of the live versions are extended, including "Get Ready" (Bon Jovi), "In and Out Of Love" (7800 Fahrenheit), "Blood on Blood" (New Jersey), "Keep The Faith" (Keep The Faith), and a duet featuring Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland performing "Who Says You Can't Go Home" (Have A Nice Day) with the band.

This "Special Edition" collection will feature new packaging. Each CD will feature new artwork, including images from each period, and new liner notes documenting the band's success through each stage of their twenty-five year career. Exclusive soft-pack versions will also contain reproductions of laminated tour credentials.

Additionally, each "Special Edition" will provide fans with the ability to gain "backstage access" to The Bon Jovi Vaults — a website being created to offer exclusive virtual content, including photos, tour memorabilia and additional live audio tracks.
Cha-ching! goes the Jovi cash register. :P Damn, I think I can feel my wallet getting lighter already.

Officially licensed photos from some of Bon Jovi's concerts are now available for purchase from TourPhotographers.com. They've all been professionally shot by David Bergman and personally approved by Jon Bon Jovi; make of that what you will. :P

Some of you might have noticed that I haven't posted videos from the past couple of shows. Well, for one thing it's hard to know what to showcase on the blog when Bon Jovi have been playing largely unremarkable "vanilla" sets, and I've been too busy to watch everything that gets uploaded in order to filter out the best. That's not to say I wouldn't be happy if I got a set like the one above when the band hits Australia. I'd be hearing songs from The Circle, an album I love, for the first time; there would be five other songs I'd never experienced before, including one from my beloved These Days; and I'd see Jon singing "I'll Be There For You" for the first time. And from all reports and what I've seen on YouTube, the band's actual performances have been great. But when you're not actually AT the show, all you really get is the set list on paper (screen, but you know what I mean) and there hasn't been a lot of variation between shows.

I've said this before but it really is not that difficult to appease 99% of diehard fans. All you need is one or two rarities each night. I've followed several PBPs that went something along the lines of "Boring set, boring set, boring set, *insert rare song* OH MY GOD THIS IS THE GREATEST SET EVER!".

It's true that not everyone will like those songs but you could say that about any song in the set. I know Jon hates the thought of a "lull" during a concert, but then isn't that why he plays abominations like "We Got It Going On" (which, by the way, could be rotated with something like "One Wild Night" or "99 in the Shade" for a similar crowd effect)?

So for complete media guides (including videos) of each show, head to Hath's Circle Tour blog. We're all part of a community here in the Bon Jovi blogosphere and there's no reason why we can't share resources. ;) I'll of course continue to post set lists and other news/interesting things, and embed videos when we get some gems or if there's something kind of unique or cool about a performance. :)

Tampa set list

Given this was the concert that the misguided Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest at, I was kind of hoping for a "Hey God" / "Happy Now" / "Have a Nice Day" triple shot but it wasn't to be. Nevertheless, it seems Westboro's anti-gay, anti-Semitic message was drowned out by a counter-protest which brings me great satisfaction.

But amidst all that, there was actually a Bon Jovi concert tonight and here is the set list:

Atlanta set list

The fiddler who seems to polarise Bon Jovi diehards through no fault of her own (Lorenza Ponce) joined Bon Jovi for a couple of songs, and "Love's the Only Rule" returned to the set which I'm very happy about. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to report from the Atlanta show.

Videos from Tulsa

Ready for some vids from Bon Jovi's first Tulsa gig in over two decades?

OPEN ALL NIGHT - A bit of a so-called "chick song" so it's sweet to hear an enthusiastic male voice towards the end of the video. ;) If memory serves me (and I'm sure the Jovi blogosphere will correct me if I'm wrong), this is the first Bounce song of the Circle tour and only the second time this song has been performed live...

LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME - Kind of shaky and the picture's not clear but our boy Richie Sambora is sounding pretty good and that's the most important thing.

Tulsa set list + review

Bon Jovi took the Circle tour to Oklahoma tonight for their first show in Tulsa since 1989. There were some breakdowns in communication so if it turns out the set list was a bit different to what I've posted, I'll make the changes accordingly. Seems like a short gig, although we did get a tour debut. Just not 100% sure what song! It was either "Open All Night" from Bounce, "Open All Night" from the box set, or "These Arms Are Open All Night" (also from the box set)...

EDIT: Confirmation that it was the Bounce song.

But in quick time, here's a review by Jennifer Chancellor for Tulsa World:
Bon Jovi kick-started its set Tuesday night with an inspirational and perhaps too-literal video montage of the rock act’s tour and new album, “The Circle,” with a large circle of words that morphed into, well, a huge circle.

“So, what y’all been up to for the last 20 years?” lead singer Jon Bon Jovi asked the audience, referencing how long it’s been since his band last performed in Tulsa. He then launched into “When We Were Beautiful,” and his eyes looked misty as cameras projected his face onto a huge screen behind him and drums rumbled the BOK Center arena.

Dallas review: Bon Jovi has lost its snarl but that's not a problem

Here's a review of Bon Jovi's first night (April 10) in Dallas by Mike Daniel for the Dallas Morning News:
Bon Jovi has lost its snarl. But that's not really a problem. It's by design, as demonstrated by the band's polished-to-a-mirror-shine performance Saturday at a long-sold-out American Airlines Center.

Videos from Dallas

A couple of vids from Bon Jovi's second show in Dallas.

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT - Most of the performances this tour have been acoustic; this is one of the electric ones. There's a really cool section with some additional lyrics from about 2:40 onwards.

HAVE A NICE DAY - This seems to work as an encore opener. Lively performance with attitude.

CAPTAIN CRASH & THE BEAUTY QUEEN FROM MARS

Dallas 2nd night set list

Part of Bon Jovi's second show in Dallas was streamed live via Ustream. The webcast was scheduled to be the first four songs but we got six before a message popped up saying they were extending it as a token of appreciation to "the best fans in the world", and there would be four more songs in four minutes. (I think a new video for "When We Were Beautiful" was shot during that break). When the webcast resumed, we got the extra four songs and no more, with the stream cutting off before Richie took the stage, much to my chagrin. Still, I did get to watch half a Bon Jovi show live for free so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. :P

According to an e-mail I got from Ustream a few hours before the show, this webcast was "the first live streamed concert available on the iPad through Ustream’s iPad free viewing application. It will also be available on Ustream’s viewing applications for iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices."

Anyway, thanks to Jovination for the rest of the set list. But let me just say that "Love's the Only Rule" deserves to be played every night on this tour and I'm actually quite disappointed that Jon seems to have decided otherwise lately.

St Paul and Dallas videos and story

There weren't really any rarities to come from Bon Jovi's April 7 and April 8 shows in St Paul or the first night in Dallas, and I'm keen to avoid slowing down this site with too many videos -- I currently have the webcast for the second Dallas show embedded at the top of the page -- so it might be best to direct you to Hath's Circle tour blog for videos from the past three shows:
Hath and her team have been compiling an extensive media guide to each show all tour so give them a HAND. ;)

(Ok, that was a terrible pun. Hopefully Bon Jovi deliver some awesome surprises tonight so I can go back to gushing about the band instead of making bad jokes. :P )

Also, for a feelgood Jon Bon Jovi story, here's one about him visiting a homeless shelter in St Paul:
It is highly unusual for an international rock star to spend two hours at a homeless shelter. However, hours before his sold out show at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Jon Bon Jovi was walking around People Serving People on a "fact-finding mission."

Dallas 1st night set list

Bon Jovi's first night in Dallas, TX. Tomorrow is the live webcast via UStream, which I'm guessing will kick off with "Blood on Blood". (For the benefit of international fans, I believe the live stream begins Monday at about 2am GMT).

St Paul review: That Bon Jovi thing worked back then, still works

Here's a review of Bon Jovi's first night in St Paul by Ross Raihala for TwinCities.com/The Pioneer Press:
When we last saw Bon Jovi in St. Paul, back in March '08, the shaggy-haired rockers had taken an ever-so-slight turn toward Nashville, which essentially meant ceding some far-off corner of the stage to a fiddle player.

Wednesday, during the first show of a two-night stand at the Xcel Energy Center, the New Jersey boys went back to the basics in front of a sold-out crowd of about 18,000. Not to say the concert was really all that different — Jon Bon Jovi has been riding a steel horse since the Reagan administration, after all. If anything, the night proved — gulp — these guys are only getting better with age.

St Paul 2nd night set list

"Summertime" made its tour debut at Bon Jovi's second night in St Paul. There weren't necessarily any out-of-this-world inclusions in the set but that's not to say there weren't a couple of eyebrow raisers, such as "Runaway" closing the show and "Love's the Only Rule" being omitted altogether.

"Saturday Night" was electric.

New dates, new tweet, and a couple of vids

The past week and Easter long weekend have been pretty busy for me (and I'm not even religious) so a few updates are in order now, before Bon Jovi kicks off the next leg of the tour on April 7.

Firstly, some new shows have been added:
  • July 9, 2010 - East Rutherford, NJ - New Meadowlands Stadium
  • July 21, 2010 - Toronto, ON - Rogers Center
  • July 31, 2010 - Chicago, IL - Soldier Field
Kid Rock will be supporting most of the July shows (presumably coming on after the SuperBAND Tonight winner in each city). I've been known to enjoy some Kid Rock but I'm intrigued by the apparently growing relationship between the guy who sings "I don't wanna be your friend, I wanna f*** you like I'm never gonna see you again" and Bon Jovi, of all rock bands. Jon isn't trying to "dirty up" his image, is he? :P

Secondly, another message from Jon via Facebook and Twitter, following up from his plea back in March to get more airtime for "Superman Tonight":
ok folks we're making headway at radio with Superman and i thank you.. bags are packed and i'm waiting at the door to get to Minneapolis. great city. great crowds...the video went 9 to 8 on VH1 and again thx..gonna announce Giants #4 and Soldier Field number 2 this week with Kid Rock as Special Guest..it is going to be great...see you soon....jbj

Thirdly, I never posted any videos from Bon Jovi's March 30 Washington, DC show. The set wasn't that impressive but it doesn't warrant a complete shun. ;) These two have been staple but I don't showcase them often...
