Selected videos from Charlotte

"American Reckoning". Bruce Springsteen is quite possibly my favourite live act, so I have a real soft spot for the use of "The Promised Land" harmonica intro/outro. Actually, Jon cranking out the harmonica was one of my favourite things about this song anyway. And the "New Jersey vs Everybody" shirt is a nice touch, ha:

"Let It Rain" with another harmonica outro. Harmonica, more like HarJonica, amirite? Okay, that was terrible -- I'll shut up now and let you watch the video (with bonus David Bryan facial expressions):

"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is probably one of my less liked Keep the Faith tracks, but it's a fun song that made its tour debut in Charlotte:

Selected videos from Raleigh

"Story of Love". Big fan of this song, which made its tour premiere in Raleigh:

"Limitless". I'm still disappointed this was the lead single over "Beautiful Drug" but whatever. The song is okay and I don't mind it as the show opener:

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night". Jon has a bit of a coughing fit in the middle of this performance but I'm fairly confident he hasn't re-contracted COVID. Anyway, I always dug the acoustic version of "Saturday Night" regardless of why they might be doing it that way now:

JBJ performs Saturday Night for Covenant House benefit

There have been quite a few virtual concerts during this pandemic, and Jon Bon Jovi lent his pipes to another one on May 18, playing an acoustic version of "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" for A Night of Covenant House Stars. The show raised funds to assist young people facing homelessness during the COVID-19 crisis.

Jon is a long-time supporter of Covenant House. Check out his performance of "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night":

I'm enjoying the acoustic stuff at the moment and it's been cool to see Jon and/or the band contributing different songs to these events. Hopefully we'll be able to safely enjoy live gigs again at some point.

Yes, you read that correctly. No "Wanted Dead or Alive", but "I'd Die For You" was played.

Def Leppard opened for Bon Jovi on this show, the first time they've played together since 1986. I've seen both bands live, but it would be kind of cool to see them on the same bill (probably more so in their respective peaks though). Def Leppard posted these pics on their social media accounts:

Videos from Sønderborg

"I'd Die For You" (it's only 26 not-great-sounding seconds, but I had to include it since it was the biggest surprise of the night):

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" (most of it):

"In These Arms" (partial, with the screen oriented the wrong way but you get the idea):

Bon Jovi in Sydney 8/12/18

Bon Jovi ended the Australian leg of the This House Is Not For Sale Tour in Sydney. I'd spent the week in Sydney catching up with family and friends before going to the concert on Saturday night so it's been a busy few days, but I'm finally home in Perth and writing this blog post.

Here's what was played in Sydney:

Sydney, NSW, Australia - ANZ Stadium - December 8, 2018 set list

  1. You Give Love a Bad Name
  2. Raise Your Hands
  3. Lost Highway
  4. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  5. This House is Not For Sale
  6. Roller Coaster
  7. We Weren't Born to Follow
  8. We Don't Run
  9. It's My Life
  10. God Bless This Mess
  11. Born to Be My Baby
  12. Have a Nice Day
  13. Keep the Faith
  14. Bed of Roses
  15. Lay Your Hands on Me
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Captain Crash & the Beauty Queen From Mars

  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. I'll Be There For You

    Encore #2:
  22. Blood on Blood
  23. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night

Videos from Sydney

"Blood on Blood":

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" plus the final bows:

"Born to Be My Baby". Jon goes into the crowd and sings in front of the person filming:

"Livin' on a Prayer". Jon dips into the crowd for this one too:

If you have any videos from Sydney you'd like to share, feel free to link to them in the comments.

My thoughts

Jon's vocal issues have been pretty well documented by fans over the last few years. But he sounded good by current standards, even if he was kind of running out of steam in the second encore (I'm still glad he did the second encore though). There are concerts where he's been pretty much rooted to the spot and clinging to the mic stand while sounding average, and that obviously doesn't make for a good show. In Sydney, however, he was moving around, working the crowd, and being a front man worth seeing. I had the best time, and I'm really glad I made the trip.

Plus, as I briefly mentioned in my belated Brisbane post, I got to meet Phil X in Sydney... I might do a separate blog post about that?

I'm also quite proud of the fact that the lead singer of my favourite band is one of the few Americans who can pronounce "Melbourne" and "Brisbane" correctly. 😛

Birds of Tokyo were great as the support act too. They're from Perth, by the way. Hopefully Bon Jovi can make it there next time. 😉

Were you at the show?

Where to next?

Bon Jovi have announced tour dates for Europe in May, June, and July 2019. The Sydney concert also coincided with a Runaway Tours trip, so there was a Q&A with Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan, Tico Torres, where it was reportedly revealed a new album is slated for release in 2019.

Bon Jovi in Allentown 2/05/18

Bon Jovi (as a band) hadn't played in Allentown since 1984, when they were Scorpions' support act. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora played solo shows there in the 90s, but either way it's been a while. One might have expected a very predictable set list for Bon Jovi's first ever headlining gig there. It turned out to be the most surprising set of the year (so far). Here's what they played:

Allentown, PA, USA - PPL Center - May 2, 2018

  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Raise Your Hands
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  5. Lost Highway
  6. In These Arms
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  9. It's My Life
  10. We Weren't Born to Follow
  11. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night
  12. Keep the Faith
  13. Amen
  14. Bed of Roses
  15. Lay Your Hands on Me
  16. Runaway
  17. Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars
  18. Bad Medicine

    Encore:
  19. Dry County
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Livin' on a Prayer

"Dry County" made its tour debut, having not been played since the Because We Can Tour. "Saturday Night" and "Captain Crash" were played for the first time this year. "In These Arms" made its second appearance of 2018. And "We Got It Goin' On" was dropped (which I'm not at all sad about, but it was a surprise given it's pretty much been a staple for over a decade now).

Videos from Allentown

"Dry County". Won't lie, this is pretty rough vocally, though I think Jon sounds marginally better as the song progresses. But I love the song so much I probably wouldn't have cared if I were there:

"In These Arms". A decent performance by current standards. The camera pans to Phil X during the solo but it's definitely John Shanks playing it:

UPDATE: "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night":

  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Raise Your Hands
  3. Knockout
  4. You Give Love a Bad Name
  5. Born to Be My Baby
  6. Lost Highway
  7. We Weren't Born to Follow
  8. Lay Your Hands on Me
  9. In These Arms
  10. New Year's Day
  11. (You Want To) Make a Memory
  12. Bed of Roses
  13. It's My Life
  14. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night
  15. Wanted Dead or Alive
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Have a Nice Day
  18. Keep the Faith
  19. Bad Medicine

    encore:
  20. Always
  21. Livin' on a Prayer
  22. These Days
Jon danced with a fan during "Bed of Roses", while "Make a Memory" made its tour debut.

Videos from São Paulo

"Bed of Roses" (I was pretty much grinning through for most of this):

Here's most of "Make a Memory":

"You Give Love a Bad Name"... and Jon working the catwalk with some nice mic stand twirls:

"Lay Your Hands on Me":

"Always":

"These Days":

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" (including a reflective speech for Jon mid-song):

If you'd like to share more videos from this show, feel free to link to them in the comments.🙂

Jon's voice has been the subject of plenty of discussion in fan circles over the last few years (for good reason), but there have been signs during the South American leg that it's improving. It's nice to see a bit of rock star swagger in these videos too. 😉

Were you in São Paulo?

There's been no official word on any other tour dates, but Phil X tweeted that Europe is on the cards for 2018:

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast Bulletin is reporting that an Australian tour is set for late 2018:
BON Jovi are set to answer Gold Coast music fans’ prayers next year when they bring their 2018 Australian tour to Metricon Stadium.
Leading promoter Paul Dainty, president and CEO of TEG Dainty, said he had been working to deliver local music fans a stadium show at the home of the Gold Coast Suns AFL team.
“When Bon Jovi tours next year, I’ll bring them to Metricon,” he said.
“We had something for February next year but we couldn’t get it in there with the Commonwealth Games but we’ve got Bon Jovi coming in 2018/2019.”

Bon Jovi in Santiago 14/09/17

Bon Jovi kicked off the South American leg of their This House Is Not For Sale in Chile. Here's what was played:

Set list: Santiago, Chile - Estadio Monumental - 14 September 2017
  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Raise Your Hands
  3. Knockout
  4. You Give Love a Bad Name
  5. Born to Be My Baby
  6. Lost Highway
  7. We Weren't Born to Follow
  8. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  9. Runaway
  10. We Don't Run
  11. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night - acoustic
  12. Bed of Roses / Cama de Rosas
  13. It's My Life
  14. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  15. God Bless This Mess
  16. Wanted Dead or Alive
  17. Lay Your Hands on Me
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars
  20. Bad Medicine

    encore 1:
  21. In These Arms
  22. I'll Be There for You
  23. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore 2:
  24. These Days
  25. Keep the Faith

First of all, I know they do this every tour... but I must admit, I'm a little disappointed that they've dropped all but three This House Is Not For Sale songs, and one of the ones left is the worst song on the album. 😜

However, despite my bitching, I was actually impressed to see a set list like this, after the stagnant sets of the first leg. I was also anxious to hear how Jon would sound.

Videos from Santiago

"Bed of Roses" (with the chorus sung in Spanish):

"I'll Be There For You":

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night":

UPDATE 17/09/17: Here's "These Days". I'd be lying if I said it sounded amazing but hopefully it gets better each time:

If you'd like to share any videos from Santiago, feel free to link to them in the comments. 🙂

Bon Jovi in Atlanta 10/2/17

Bon Jovi headed to Atlanta, Georgia for their second show of the This House Is Not For Sale Tour. The set list was similar, though not exactly the same, as that of the opening night in Greenville. "Because We Can" got dropped (hopefully forever) but so did "Always" (unfortunately).

Set list: Atlanta, GA, USA - Philips Arena - 10 February 2017
  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Knockout
  3. You Give Love A Bad Name
  4. Born To Be My Baby
  5. We Weren't Born To Follow
  6. Lost Highway
  7. Roller Coaster
  8. Work For The Working Man
  9. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  10. We Got It Goin' On
  11. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  12. It's My Life
  13. We Don't Run
  14. God Bless This Mess

  20. Bad Medicine
  21. Keep the Faith
    Encore:
  22. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night
  23. Wanted Dead Or Alive
  24. Livin' On A Prayer
Here's "Livin' on a Prayer" from this concert:

Like the Greenville show, there's been a lack of decent YouTube videos from Atlanta. I'm guessing that people who might be inclined to take videos have been live streaming instead. I prefer not to use up my battery and data that way, but that's just me.

UPDATE 14/2/17: "Blood on Blood" from this show is now on YouTube. It includes Jon kissing Phil X after the latter messed up:

Phil went on to explain this moment on Instagram:

Videos from Perth

A small selection of videos from what has now jumped to the top of the list of favourite concerts I've been to: Bon Jovi's Perth show at Subiaco Oval/Patersons Stadium on December 8, 2010. In all honesty, the acoustics at Subi are pretty average but it's the only venue big enough for huge acts like Bon Jovi and U2, and there is at least one worse sounding major venue in Perth. A good show is still a good show.

No Apologies - Not a huge fan of this song, but I've enjoyed it live.

Bad Medicine / Shout! - I would have preferred a different medley song, but the crowd lapped this up and so did I. Jon flirting with someone in the crowd about 3:33 into the video.

Something for the Pain - YESSSSSSSSSS!! ;)

Livin' on a Prayer - The grand finale... and yes, that's your friendly neighbourhood Jovi blogger at about 3:45. What a knob. :P

Check out Hath's Circle Tour blog for more video links and multimedia from the show.

Also, here's a teaser video for an interview with Jon. It was shot in one of the boxes at Subi... but I'm not sure when the actual interview is going to pop up.

These Days, Sat Night, Always, Dry County, Roses in Bueno Aires

I don't know if I can say "Bon Jovi loves Argentina" given they kind of ignored the country for 15 years, but I think I can quite safely say the band put on a hell of a show in Bueno Aires on October 3, 2010.

THESE DAYS - Maybe it's just shock from the killer set, but I think this could well be the best performance of "These Days" that has occurred since I became a diehard fan. And by the sounds of it, one of the best crowd performances too! Jon also changed the lyric from "I guess she's trying to be James Dean" to "She was trying to be like me".

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT - I love those "ad libs".

Videos from London (O2#6-8)

Some videos from June 17-20 of Bon Jovi's residency at the O2 arena.

THORN IN MY SIDE (Night #6: June 17, 2010) - This deserves a run every night of the Circle Tour. It really comes into its own live, and the twin solo/jam session at the end of the song is awesome. (Cheers to Jay for sending me the link to this video).

WILD IN THE STREETS (Night #7: June 19, 2010) - That was fun! I'd forgotten how much I actually like this song.

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT (Night #7: June 19, 2010) - An incredible performance, which includes some ad lib references to "Something to Believe In"

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN (Night #7: June 19, 2010) - Speaking of which... how about ANOTHER video of this? :P

SQUEEZE BOX (Night #8: June 20, 2010)- A closer video of this cool acoustic cover.

Acoustic videos from London (O2 #8) June 20

Here are some videos from Bon Jovi's acoustic set at the O2 on June 20, 2010. Jon and the boys sound great, and "These Days" unplugged is simply gorgeous.

These videos came from Beehive City.

Even more Meadowlands videos

A selection of videos from the third night (May 29, 2010)...

DRY COUNTY - Sounds stronger than it did the first night. Amazing song.

I'D DIE FOR YOU

JUST OLDER

JUMPIN' JACK FLASH / I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT (electric) - Cool jam near the end.

IN THESE ARMS

And a couple of earlier videos that I didn't post here or here...

RAISE YOUR HANDS from the first night (tour debut)

BED OF ROSES from the second night - This isn't the first time they've played "Roses" this tour but this is probably the best performance of it, vocally at least. Jon's going for (and hitting) the original notes as opposed to singing the This Left Feels Right melody over electric instruments.

Videos from Dallas

A couple of vids from Bon Jovi's second show in Dallas.

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT - Most of the performances this tour have been acoustic; this is one of the electric ones. There's a really cool section with some additional lyrics from about 2:40 onwards.

HAVE A NICE DAY - This seems to work as an encore opener. Lively performance with attitude.

Some Montreal videos

Some videos from Bon Jovi's March 19 show in Montreal, Quebec.

SOMEDAY I'LL BE SATURDAY NIGHT; partial - The first part of the song is missing but this video is a bit of a treat for David Bryan fans. He tends to be overlooked a bit so I figured he deserved some love. ;)

I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU - Audience sounds great!

LIVIN' ON A PRAYER - The stage set-up looks pretty cool from this angle and how electric is that crowd?!
