A look back at Wembley #3, a glance forward to Bon Jovi's future

A little over three weeks ago, Bon Jovi played their last of three shows at London's Wembley Stadium to close out the Forever Tour so far. And if that was going to be their final show, they did swap in a couple of little surprises, while keeping the same structure they've been using since the tour began.

London, England - Wembley Stadium #3 - 9 September 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. You Give Love a Bad Name
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Legendary
  8. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  9. Bed of Roses
  10. Have a Nice Day
  11. These Days
  12. This House Is Not For Sale
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Raise Your Hands
  16. Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars
  17. Hey God
  18. Love's the Only Rule
  19. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  20. I'll Be There for You
  21. Wanted Dead or Alive
  22. Bad Medicine
  23. Always
"Love's the Only Rule" and "Captain Crash" made their tour debuts.

Selected videos from Wembley #3

Love's the Only Rule - a little tepid but if they played it more, it would probably be better as Jon's confidence often plays a key role in how a performance comes across. Still one of my favourite songs from The Circle:

Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars - This song has always been cheesy, poppy fun that made me smile on Crush, although I don't know if Jon was concentrating too hard on his vocals to really enjoy it until the end.

Always - Jon giving early leavers a bit of stick before ending the tour for the known future (as no other shows have been announced at this stage:

Thinkin' on a prayer

Part of me had wondered if this was it for Bon Jovi as a live act, even as another part of me thought, "surely they're not going to give up the likely ticket sales boost of billing something as a farewell tour!"

But Jon said during the show that they were indeed planning to tour again in about five months' time, which would be around February 2027. I rate him as a songwriter and would have been fine with the rest of his music career being based in the studio, but presumably he thinks he can handle touring again after this test run, so good for him.

Jon has effectively had to relearn how to use his voice. I'm proud of him for the work he's done. As a front man and entertainer, he's getting his mojo back and not clinging to his mic stand all the time, and that's awesome to see. But I'm also acutely aware that for all the fan and marketing hype, he's still nowhere near the top of his game vocally and... I don't think he ever will be again. He's made me eat my words before though. Please can he do it again? 🙏

Take 2 for Bon Jovi in London

Bon Jovi took to the stage at Wembley for the second of three London shows. I was expecting, or at least hoping, for a couple of switch-ups after three identical set lists in a row on the Forever tour, but here's what was played.

London, England - Wembley Stadium #2 - 6 September 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. You Give Love a Bad Name
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Legendary - featuring James Bay
  8. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  9. Bed of Roses
  10. Have a Nice Day
  11. These Days
  12. This House Is Not For Sale
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Raise Your Hands
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Hey God
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine
  22. Always

Not identical, but very, very close. Though I guess doing a duet with James Bay is technically a switch-up. And I'm glad "Hey God" and "These Days" have survived.

Videos from Wembley #2

Legendary - I sometimes sound like I dissing this song because I think "Living Proof" should have been the lead single...  but "Legendary" is perfectly fine on the album, and it's fun live. James Bay does have a better voice and tone than Jon though, especially now, but it was still an enjoyable performance.

I don't know if everyone is thinking this is the end of the road, or if it's just the vlogger/content creator world we live in, but people keep recording full shows for the 'tube:

Thinkin' on a prayer

There's still one more London show to go so I'll share more thoughts then.

Maybe more tour dates to come in the new year, maybe not. But night 3 in Wembley is, at the very least, the final show of this leg, so let's go out with a metaphorical bang.

Bon Jovi live in London again

Bon Jovi headed back to London for the first of three shows at Wembley Stadium to finish this leg of the Forever tour. And possibly the whole tour since no other shows have been announced?

London, England - Wembley Stadium #1 - 4 September 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. You Give Love a Bad Name
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Legendary
  8. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  9. Bed of Roses
  10. In These Arms
  11. These Days
  12. This House Is Not For Sale
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Raise Your Hands
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Hey God
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine - featuring Everett Bradley
  22. Always

If you're thinking "that's the exact same set list as Edinburgh and Dublin" you'd be right, haha. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Unless you're going to drastically play a different set every night a la Bruce Springsteen, I'd much rather they tighten up the "standard" core set list, even if that means playing basically the same thing, with maybe one or two changes if you're playing multiple nights in the same city.

I'm also happy that no one who's attended this leg so far has missed out on "Hey God" and "These Days" yet!

Videos from London #1

Not all heroes wear capes, some of them just record the whole show and put it on YouTube:

Thinkin' on a prayer

I'd be surprised if they didn't change a song or two for the next show, but hopefully it's not dropping a great song for something blah.

As for what happens after the Wembley run... It's hard to imagine they wouldn't be billing these shows as your last chance to see Bon Jovi if this really is it. So in that regard, I'd expect something else to be announced, but I also don't think large-scale world tours are realistic anymore... so we'll see.

Luck of the Irish for Bon Jovi in Dublin

Fresh from their European return in Edinburgh, Bon Jovi headed to Dublin for the next stop of the Forever tour.

Dublin, Ireland - Croke Park - 30 August 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. You Give Love a Bad Name
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Legendary
  8. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  9. Bed of Roses
  10. In These Arms
  11. These Days
  12. This House Is Not For Sale
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Raise Your Hands
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Hey God
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine - featuring Everett Bradley
  22. Always

If you're thinking that looks familiar, you'd be right -- same set list as Edinburgh. But that's alright, at least the Irish crowd didn't get stiffed on "Hey God" or "These Days".

Video from Dublin

Some legend recorded the whole show so rather than handpicking personal highlights, I'll just share that. 😉

Thinkin' on a prayer

Joe Elliott was at this show, which would have been a nice opportunity to get him on stage for a "Walls of Jericho" duet, but nope.

And sorry to harp on about it again but they really should do something that first half. Maybe open with "Living Proof" since it's the effing Forever tour, and drop stuff like "Lost Highway", "We Weren't Born to Follow", "Whole Lot of Leavin'" -- songs I actually like on the record, but they add nothing worthwhile in a live setting. Not to mention, the so-called easy songs often make Jon sound more vulnerable... whether it's because he's so nervous, or there's no crowd involvement to feed off, or they sit in an awkward vocal bridge or whatever.

Of course, a big part of this tour (and probably any shows Bon Jovi does ever again) are about the emotion behind it after everything Jon in particular has been through. No one's realistically expecting vocal perfection. But that doesn't mean you can't tweak things better and make the most of an imperfect situation.

Anyway, I personally know a few people attending one or more of the upcoming Wembley shows so I'm keen to get their impressions afterwards!

Bon Jovi resumes the Forever Tour in Edinburgh

After a month off, Bon Jovi headed to Scotland to kick off the next leg of the Forever Tour. (I say next leg, but it could well be the final leg, given no further shows have been confirmed after Wembley in September.) There were plenty of questions, like:

  • did the break do Jon's voice any good? (Hopefully, yes.)
  • will Europe get better sets than the US? (Reasonably likely and I'd love to see it, but that also sucks for American fans who were paying a pretty penny for these concerts.)
  • will they do something crappy like "save themselves" for Wembley? (Hopefully not.)

Anyway, the first show of this leg was in Edinburgh, and here's what unfolded.

Edinburgh, Scotland - Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium - 28 August 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. You Give Love a Bad Name
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Legendary
  8. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  9. Bed of Roses
  10. In These Arms
  11. These Days
  12. This House Is Not For Sale
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Raise Your Hands
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Hey God
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine - featuring Everett Bradley
  22. Always

Legit couldn't believe we got freaking "Hey God" and "These Days" for the first time since 2013 and 2019, respectively. Phil X rocking the kilt was a fun touch, too.

Selected videos from Edinburgh

These Days - Let's not pretend this is the greatest performance ever, but vocally, I'd say Jon's roughly on par with when I saw them do this song live in Melbourne in 2013.

Hey God - Now this sounded better than I was expecting... and it's a killer track. But perhaps more to the point, Jon was using the stage, getting into the song, showing some passion... and that can make the world of difference to a performance when your vocals aren't the best, because being rooted to the spot and clinging to the microphone only highlights any weaknesses. So yeah, good on you, JBJ.

In These Arms - Arguably the best performance of this song on the tour so far. But why can't Phil X play the solo instead of John Shanks? Like c'mon, dude.

Thinkin' on a prayer

The first half of the main set, as it was in New York, seems to be mostly "get Jon settled in with something that's not too challenging" time... but there are better songs you could use for that. Hell, maybe even something from the album you're meant to be promoting, like "Waves", "Walls of Jericho", "Seeds", or that neglected single "Living Proof"?

But overall, a decent start to the UK/European leg. Dublin's up next, and hopefully they get a good show.

Looking back on shows 4, 5, 6 & 7 of the Forever tour

Back to my official unofficial catch-up of Bon Jovi's Madison Square Garden residency, and we're looking at shows 4 to 7 -- leading up to the infamous shortened show 8, for which ticket-holders have reportedly started receiving refunds for.

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #4 - 14 July 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  10. Bed of Roses
  11. Have a Nice Day
  12. It's My Life
  13. Livin' on a Prayer
  14. Lay Your Hands on Me
  15. Living Proof
  16. This House Is Not for Sale
  17. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  18. I'll Be There for You
  19. Red, White and Jersey
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine
  22. Always

Literally the same set from the previous show, lol. But he probably sounded better on those songs overall.

Videos from #4:

Shout out to Tully Blanchard who recorded the whole show. Legend!

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #5 - 16 July 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Let it Rain
  10. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  11. Bed of Roses
  12. Have a Nice Day
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Lay Your Hands on Me
  16. Limitless
  17. This House Is Not for Sale
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Red, White and Jersey
  21. Wanted Dead or Alive
  22. Bad Medicine
  23. Always

A couple of changes, with "Let It Rain" and "Limitless" make their Forever Tour debuts.

Selected videos from #5:

Let It Rain - One of my favourites from 2020, an album I genuinely still rate today. The acoustic intro/harmonica outro is kinda cool.

Limitless - One of my not-so-favourites from the aforementioned 2020, lol. But it's okay. Has its moments and probably works better in a stadium than most of the better songs from that album. At least they didn't decide to do "Unbroken" or something. 😜

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #6 - 19 July 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Let it Rain
  10. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  11. Bed of Roses
  12. Have a Nice Day
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Lay Your Hands on Me
  16. Limitless
  17. This House Is Not for Sale
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Bad Medicine

Show was shortened, with "Wanted Dead or Alive", "Always", and "Red, White and Jersey" cut from the planned set list.

Selected videos from #6:

Bad Medicine - Look, let's be real here. Jon sounds rough. I mean, the fans he high-fived and fist-bumped probably didn't notice or care in the moment, but I'd guess his voice on the night is why the show was cut.

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #7 - 21 July 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Let it Rain
  10. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  11. Bed of Roses
  12. Have a Nice Day
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer
  15. Raise Your Hands
  16. Limitless
  17. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Red, White and Jersey
  21. Wanted Dead or Alive
  22. Bad Medicine
  23. Always

Selected videos from #7:

Raise Your Hands - First time since before COVID. Apart from that voice crack at the end, it was a decent-sounding performance.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - This used to feel a teensy bit overdone on earlier tours, but I'm enjoying it here. Works fairly well live and this is its Forever Tour debut.

Thinkin' on a prayer

Bit up and down, with sets being pretty stagnant bar one or two swaps here and there, but I suspect that's par for the course going forward.

With this post, I've now caught up on all the MSG shows and you can see the others at the links below:
After a month's break, the tour resumes in the UK this week. I hope the fans there get some consistently quality shows, no matter which one(s) they're attending, but we'll soon see if the rest has done Jon some good.

Looking back on shows 2 & 3 of the Forever tour

As previously mentioned, Bon Jovi's Madison Square Garden shows coincided with my overseas training camp, so I wasn't blogging in real time. And I'm going to share a few retrospective thoughts in the next few posts, before shows resume in the UK.

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #2 - 9 July 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  10. In These Arms
  11. Have a Nice Day
  12. It's My Life
  13. Livin' on a Prayer
  14. Lay Your Hands on Me
  15. Blood on Blood
  16. Living Proof
  17. This House Is Not for Sale
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Red, White and Jersey
  21. Wanted Dead or Alive
  22. Bad Medicine

Selected videos from #2

I'll Be There For You - generally a communal singalong moment, and the piano-only accompaniment for the first verse and chorus was quite nice.

Red, White and Jersey - technically the live debut of the song, though it was part of a rather tepid performance for the Tony Robbins special. I think this one turned out a bit better.

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #3 - 12 July 2026

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  10. Bed of Roses
  11. Have a Nice Day
  12. It's My Life
  13. Livin' on a Prayer
  14. Lay Your Hands on Me
  15. Living Proof
  16. This House Is Not for Sale
  17. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  18. I'll Be There for You
  19. Red, White and Jersey
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine
  22. Always

Selected videos from #3

Bed of Roses - We've had a global pandemic since this song was last played, so it was good to get it back in the set. Is it perfect? No, but funnily enough, the big ballads Jon seems to want to avoid when he's lacking confidence in his voice, are probably more forgiving of some imperfections (they can sound more emotional if you sell the performance).

Always - Honestly, even if you have to noticeably drop the key, this should be a set list staple for Bon Jovi; it's their biggest worldwide hit. And if they ever had to lower it so much that it fell off the bottom of Jon's vocal range, they obviously shouldn't even entertain performing anymore. TLDR: Play the songs people go to your concert to hear.

Thinkin' on a prayer

A solid couple of gigs within the nine-show MSG residency. Pretty samey sets, but with a couple of good inclusions as I alluded to above.

I've already posted about:
with 4 to 7 on the way before the resumption of the tour at the end of the month. The order got all topsy-turvy due to my schedule, but I fully intend for the shows in Scotland, Ireland, and England to be blogged about chronologically. 😉

Bon Jovi wraps up MSG residency

With show 8's early end making the news, there was plenty of attention on show 9... which did in fact go ahead without a hitch. Or even really any mention of what happened, so no idea if the promised redo of show 8 will actually go ahead at any point... especially since it's something Jon just brought up without running it by anyone else. I suspect it will get put in the "we're not obligated/too hard" basket and forgotten, but I hope I'm wrong.

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #9 - 26 July 2026

There were at couple of (actually planned) collaborations, but "Wanted Dead or Alive" was notably dropped again (it happened on a couple of the other shows on this run).

Set list #9:

  1. Beautiful Drug
  2. We Weren't Born to Follow
  3. Lost Highway
  4. You Give Love a Bad Name
  5. Born to Be My Baby
  6. Legendary
  7. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  8. In These Arms
  9. The People's House - featuring The War and Treaty
  10. It's My Life
  11. Livin' on a Prayer
  12. Raise Your Hands
  13. This House Is Not for Sale
  14. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  15. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  16. I'll Be There for You
  17. Bad Medicine - featuring Everett Bradley
  18. Who Says You Can't Go Home - featuring Bruce Springsteen
  19. The Promised Land - Bruce Springsteen cover featuring Bruce Springsteen

Selected videos from #9:

Who Says You Can't Go Home / The Promised Land - Jon had some technical difficulties with his harmonica on the Bruce song, but I love that song and it was great to see two Jersey boys perform it together:

Shout out to Harry Ward who has blessed us with videos from all the shows on this MSG residency, including the full show 9 with timestamps. I'm forever grateful to people like Harry:

Thinkin' on a prayer

Jon said before the encore that this isn't the end, and I hope the month-long rest before he heads over to the UK does him some good. Shania Twain had similar surgery on her vocal cords and seems pretty at peace with the fact that her voice will never be the same but she's able to work with what she now has. I don't know where Jon's head is at, but his voice is... okay. Maybe it gets better, maybe this is as good as it can be now, but I never stop hoping for the best.

The next show is scheduled for 28 August in Scotland, so I'd better catch up on blogging about shows 2 to 7 before then, haha.

Show 8 of Bon Jovi's Forever tour cut short as Jon loses his voice

We're going to try something a little different starting today... and start from the 8th show of this Bon Jovi tour. Assuming the 9th show goes ahead as scheduled, I'll post about that, then start working my way back to the second - I already blogged about the first Forever Tour show.

In case you missed it, I've been away on a Muay Thai camp. I did watch some videos and read comments about the shows as they happened, but I didn't have time to sit down and gather my thoughts in any coherent fashion in between training for up to four hours a day in Thailand. But I'm back in Perth now, and... yeah, shit got real with show 8 ending abruptly, and Jon telling fans to hold onto their tickets for a rescheduled date.

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden #8 - 23 July 2026

The official line was sinus infection, but I spoke to some long-time fans who were there, and they're of the view that Jon's voice just gave out. Either way, I hope he's okay. I have genuinely worried about this tour and its impact on his health, especially after they announced nine shows at MSG alone, with a short turnaround.

Set list #8:

  1. With a Little Help from My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Let It Rain
  10. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  11. Bed of Roses
  12. Have a Nice Day
  13. It's My Life
  14. Livin' on a Prayer - featuring Pat Monahan

Selected videos from #8:

Livin' on a Prayer - This ended up being the final song of the night, with Train front man Pat Monahan getting the call-up from backstage to take on unplanned lead vocals. I actually used to be a big Train fan back in the day, right up until 2014 (just could not connect with anything on the Bulletproof Picasso album, and then they fell off my radar... sorry Pat). From what I recall from my fangirl days, Pat's actually got a hell of a voice and is a great performer, and that didn't come through at all here -- but to be fair, he rocked up to the gig thinking he was going to be watching it, not performing.

Bed of Roses - Jon started sounding really stuffed from about 4:00 onwards, or basically the second chorus. He turns around to look at his bandmates, and later needs the crowd to finish the song for him.

Later, he joked about how he was proving he wasn't lip syncing. But... ouch. 😟

Thinkin' on a prayer

Look, for any critiques and grievances I may have had over the years... I love Jon. Fingers crossed he hasn't done any further damage to his vocal cords. It was a heartbreaking end to the show, and... hopefully, just this show. I hope he hasn't pushed himself too far.

The fact that Jon kept saying he "felt great" sounds more like he was confused about why his voice was misbehaving like that, rather than battling an illness. Personally, when I have a sinus infection, I most certainly do not feel great, but your mileage may vary.

Anyway, get well soon, Jon. I'm in your corner on the other side of the globe.

Bon Jovi's big comeback in New York

And we're back! We as in this blog, but also we as in Bon Jovi the band.

I'm actually away on a Muay Thai camp at the moment, doing two two-hour sessions a day in the heat, which is why my published thoughts on the comeback shows are delayed by several days. Training like this, plus showering and doing laundry ASAP after each session, is tiring and time-consuming, y'all!

Anyway. Jon Bon Jovi's vocal issues, and his subsequent vocal cord surgery in 2022 have been fairly well documented at this point. There was a certain buzz and trepidation about their closest thing to a tour since then.

Jon has performed live here and there over the last few years... but to be perfectly honest, it's been a bit heartbreaking and underwhelming most of the time. So while I'm sure I would have bought tickets if they'd announced a show in Australia, I can't say I've been expecting much from this run of shows.

But here's what they played:

New York City, NY, USA - Madison Square Garden - 7 July 2026 setlist

  1. With a Little Help From My Friends - The Beatles cover
  2. Beautiful Drug
  3. We Weren't Born to Follow
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  6. You Give Love a Bad Name
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Legendary
  9. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  10. In These Arms
  11. Have a Nice Day
  12. It's My Life
  13. Livin' on a Prayer
  14. Lay Your Hands on Me
  15. Blood on Blood
  16. Living Proof
  17. This House Is Not for Sale
  18. Keep the Faith

    Encore:
  19. I'll Be There for You
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine

Selected videos from MSG

With a Little Help from My Friends - including the video intro. With lines like "What would you do if I sang out of tune?" and "I'll try not to sing out of key", it may seem a little on the nose to open with it. And it's not exactly a high energy rocker. But in this case, it felt fitting somehow, especially with everyone coming together to sing the chorus.

Living Proof - finally, the neglected single! Actually sounds pretty decent, if I do say so myself. I can't turn back time but I so wish this had been the song that got any promotion from Forever, rather than "Legendary".

In These Arms - Jon honestly sounded way better than I was expecting here and I'm so weirdly proud of this man who doesn't know me from a bar of soap and whose achievements I have absolutely nothing to do with.

Blood on Blood - Hmm he's trying, but this sounds pretty fragile. I don't know if we can maybe bump Everett Bradley up in the mix? I know Everett's not Richie Sambora, but Richie left of his own accord and Everett does make the current lineup sound better vocally than they otherwise would.

Livin' on a Prayer - between the click track and the entire venue always singing along, "Prayer" has arguably been spared to a large extent as Jon's vocals declined, despite being a painfully difficult song to sing. But I do think he sounds a bit better here than he has in recent times?

Final thoughts

It was a solid return, not perfect but I don't think anyone's expecting that anymore. Though I do really hope Jon gives me the finger and surprises us all. The set list could be stronger but I guess it's okay. Hopefully we get some deep cuts during this short run of shows.

I honestly don't know how much of a future my beloved band has. Or how I feel about it all. A lot has been made of Jon's voice but I'm also considering the band as a whole -- no one's getting any younger, and it's probably Phil X and Everett bringing the bulk of the animation and energy on stage. I still rate Jon as a songwriter but people don't buy music the way they used to.

Anyway, what did you think of the comeback show? Were you there, or watching from somewhere in the world?

And which Bon Jovi song should be my walkout song if I could pick one for a hypothetical fight? 😉

The end? Bon Jovi tour wraps up in Nashville

I feel a bit crappy saying this, but it's been a few days since Bon Jovi's 2022 Tour ended (assuming no further dates are announced) and... thank Yoda that's over.

I mean, I love Bon Jovi. Obviously the classic lineup is unlikely to ever be together again unless they do some sort of reunion special for the 40th anniversary coming up. But even the current lineup is okay with me. Besides, I met Phil X a few years ago and he's just a really cool dude. And Jon is someone I've idolised for a huge chunk of my life. But I don't think he did himself, the band or their great legacy any favours going out there and sounding like he did last month.

If the speculation is true that this tour was just a contractual obligation to Live Nation after cancelling the 2020 dates instead of postponing... well, that's a whole other shit-show. And a pretty sad way to go out if this ends up being the end. 😢

Anyway, the last show of -- the tour? This leg? -- was in Nashville and here's what was played.

Nashville, Tennessee, USA - April 30, 2022

Bridgestone Arena

  1. Livin' on a Prayer
  2. You Give Love a Bad Name
  3. The Radio Saved My Life
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let it Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Who Says You Can't Go Home

    encore #1:
  19. Wanted Dead or Alive
  20. Bad Medicine

    encore #2:
  21. I'll Be There For You

Selected videos from Nashville

"Livin' on a Prayer". "Limitless" was dropped for the first time this tour so they could open with "Prayer". Jon performed it from the back of the arena while mingling with the fans and it's probably the most fun a live "Prayer" has been in years. And he's definitely singing the bits he doesn't throw to the crowd:

"I'll Be There For You". If that does end up being the last thing they ever play on tour, it's a good song to remember:

Where to now?

I know there are plenty of fans who are totally cool with the current state of affairs and would happily continue to pay big bucks to see Jon multiple times a tour in his current state.

I also think the dudebros trying to build their platforms with "What is wrong with Jon Bon Jovi's voice?!" videos are pretty scummy.

But that doesn't change the fact that he just doesn't sound good. There are moments where he sounds okay... but it's not good... and once upon a time, he was great. If certain fans want to tell the rest of us that we're horrible humans for having functional ears, then that's okay. Because I know myself, and I'm not trying to take potshots at Jon -- I'm legitimately heartbroken.

He had vocal coach Katie Agresta with him in 2008, and he sounded brilliant -- better than he had in a long time. And then things started falling off the cliff around 2013, which I'm sure he was aware of since he started requesting a vocal coach as part of his rider during the Because We Can Tour. Mary Jo Duprey started working with him, as well as Everett Bradley, on the This House Is Not For Sale Tour in 2018, but it hasn't yielded the results we all want. (I'm in no way suggesting that's Mary Jo's fault -- she uses the same methods as Katie, after all. But Everett's probably a much better advertisement for her than Jon is.)

Is it a physical issue that's beyond repair? I've read people suggesting that Jon has a voice disorder like spasmodic dysphonia but I wouldn't have a clue about that. I just know that I don't want my idol going out there in front of the whole world (and thanks to the internet, it really is the whole world) sounding like... well, a professional singer who can't sing for toffee.

The acoustic set they were doing earlier on this tour had a lot of promise, and I think that could potentially be a way forward if Bon Jovi keeps touring after this. I know Jon wants to sell out the desert but an intimate acoustic tour would be pretty cool.

Anyway, while Jon takes an indefinite break and hopefully finds a way through this, Phil X is currently on the road with Kurt Deimer, supporting Yngwie Malmsteen.

Texas turmoil for Bon Jovi in Houston & Dallas

I put off posting anything about these shows because... well, I didn't really want to watch any of the videos. I mean, Jon has sounded pretty painful for several years now unfortunately -- but it was Houston that triggered a string of "Last Man Standing" quotes (specifically "That boy don't lip sync").

But let's back it up a bit. Here were the set lists.

Houston, Texas, USA - April 26, 2022

Toyota Center

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let it Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive

No "Bad Medicine" or "Who Says You Can't Go Home", making it the shortest show of the tour with only a couple more left (presumably). Jon reportedly got a pre-gig IV drip and had the bandage on his arm during the show.

Scroll down for videos/dissection.

Dallas, Texas, USA - April 28, 2022

American Airlines Center

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let It Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  19. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Bad Medicine

"Have a Nice Day" was dumped after whatever happened at the previous show.

Videos from Houston

"Have a Nice Day". This was the song immediately before "Prayer" -- Jon pulls out of the end of the first line, turns around and makes an explosion gesture at his throat, which foreshadowed what came afterwards:

"Livin' on a Prayer". Jon's always been pretty awkward at miming when it's called upon for TV appearances -- but he does try to make a decent fist of not singing down to the front rows so it may not have been too obvious on the night, I dunno:

To be fair, I don't think "Prayer" has ever been 100% live -- they've played to a click track and sung over some playback since the 80s. But it really saddens me to see Jon struggling as much as he is.

Jon did come out after that "Prayer" debacle and sing "Wanted Dead or Alive" (i.e. not on playback), but the crowd took the whole first verse and Phil X's harmonies are turned up loud enough to drown out the lead vocal:

Videos from Dallas

"Livin' on a Prayer". He is singing it this time:

"Keep the Faith". Just a great song and a great showcase for the band. Despite not being the classic Bon Jovi lineup, this is still a good group of musicians and I think that has been forgotten amidst all the voice dramas:

One more show left for the 2022 Tour, unless they announce new dates...

A trio of Bon Jovi Texas shows begins in Austin

First of three shows in Texas as we hit the home straight of the Bon Jovi 2022 Tour. Here's what folks in Austin got.

Austin, Texas, USA - April 23, 2022

Moody Center

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. This House Is Not For Sale
  8. Beautiful Drug
  9. Just Older
  10. Let it Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore #1:
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  22. Bad Medicine

    encore #2:
  23. I'll Be There For You

Selected videos from Austin

"Keep the Faith". Great energy. The band isn't what it was but that doesn't mean they're not good players:

"I'll Be There For You". Same exit as St. Louis, where Jon kind of just waves to the crowd and leaves, except that this time the rest of the band wasn't caught off guard:

Elvis has left the building at Bon Jovi's St Louis show

We're nearing the end of Bon Jovi's 2022 Tour. In years gone by, I would've said "end of the first leg" but I really have no clue what the future holds at this point. Anyway, here's what was played in St. Louis.

St. Louis, Missouri, USA - April 21, 2022

Enterprise Center

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born To Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let It Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore #1:
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  22. Bad Medicine

    encore #2:
  23. I'll Be There For You

Selected videos from St. Louis

"I'll Be There For You". Jon seemed emotional here, taking it all in. He used similar "Drive All Night" ad libs to the ones on the Live from London performance of "Always" in 1995. And then he just... left the stage, leaving David Bryan looking a bit confuzzled:

Jon's brother Matt called it the "Elvis exit":

"Beautiful Drug". I dig the track but I'm mostly posting this because it's one of the few new songs where Phil X can kind of cut loose a bit:

"This House Is Not For Sale". I just like the song, okay:

Everett returns as Bon Jovi plays Indianapolis

After two days off, Bon Jovi made it to Indianapolis. Everett Bradley, an Indiana University alum, was back from his recent bout of COVID. This is what the band played.

Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - April 19, 2022

Gainbridge Fieldhouse

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let it Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Have a Nice Day
  18. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  19. Wanted Dead or Alive
  20. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  21. Bad Medicine

I mean, after two whole days to think about it, you probably could've chucked "Love's the Only Rule" or something back in, but whatever. 😜

Selected videos from Indianapolis

"You Give Love a Bad Name" with the 'get up off your seats' spiel:

"Wanted Dead or Alive" (never drop this again, you're Bon Jovi):

Here comes the Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale Bon Jovi show

Okay, so on the official Bon Jovi tour dates, this show is listed as Fort Lauderdale, but when I Googled the venue it appears to be in Sunrise, which is apparently a different city?

If any Floridians read this, help me out here -- what's correct?

In the meantime, here's what was played...

Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA - April 16, 2022

FLA Live Arena

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let It Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. Lower the Flag
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  22. Bad Medicine

"Wanted Dead or Alive" was played after being unceremoniously dumped from the previous show in Tampa.

Selected videos from Sunrise/Fort Lauderdale

"Lower the Flag". Jon dedicated it to those affected by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school shooting in Parkland, Florida -- which is of course mentioned in the bridge of the song:

"Have a Nice Day". Great take-on-the-world song on the album. I've heard a couple of people say it sounded better in person than it does when you're listening back to the video:

Bon Jovi's halfway there in Tampa (but Wanted Dead or Alive isn't?)

We're at the halfway mark of Bon Jovi's 2022 Tour since no further dates have been announced after April as yet.

Since it was back to back shows again this weekend, I was going to combine the two consecutive Florida shows into one post like I did with Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina.

And then Bon Jovi went and skipped their national anthem "Wanted Dead or Alive" and I just had to put down my hot cross buns and chocolate eggs (Happy Easter, by the way) and say something. Anyway, let's breathe first, and look at what was played.

Tampa, Florida, USA - April 15, 2022

Amalie Arena

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let It Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. I'll Be There For You
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Roller Coaster
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  20. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  21. Bad Medicine

"Wanted Dead or Alive" was actually in the printed set list -- it was supposed to open the encore but they just straight up didn't play it. I guess this scenario was flagged in Savannah, when "Wanted" was listed as an audible (but did end up getting played). Still, it's a Bon Jovi show. You can't not play "Wanted"! Jon, my love, if you need to preserve your voice then please drop some of the other songs that literally no one goes to a Bon Jovi show to hear.

In other news, percussionist and king of cool Everett Bradley didn't take to the stage after testing positive to COVID, along with some 15 crew members. Everett's backing vocals have actually become really important to the current Bon Jovi live setup so I don't know if that played a part. But seriously, no "Wanted" is a no-no and I cannot stop thinking about this.

Selected videos from Tampa

"The Radio Saved My Life Tonight". This is one of my favourite songs from 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong so a legit joy of this tour has been seeing it in the set:

"Just Older". Been good to see this one in the set too. David Bryan's vocals seem so much higher in the mix here but that's maybe not a bad thing:

"Livin' on a Prayer". This is another song that you can't just not freaking do at a Bon Jovi concert, even if you have to lower the key:

"I'll Be There For You". I don't think it's a secret that I'd prefer Phil X to be taking all the solos:

Operation Bon Jovi headlines Savannah

Shout-out to the BJtours site for alerting me to the fun tidbit that this was Bon Jovi's first headlining show in Savannah -- the last time they played there was as an opening act for the Scorpions in 1984.

So here's what Bon Jovi played almost 38 years later.

Savannah, Georgia, USA - April 13, 2022

Enmarket Arena

  1. Limitless
  2. The Radio Saved My Life Tonight
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. We Weren't Born to Follow
  5. It's My Life
  6. Beautiful Drug
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. This House Is Not For Sale
  9. Just Older
  10. Let it Rain
  11. Keep the Faith
  12. American Reckoning
  13. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  14. Do What You Can
  15. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  16. Lost Highway
  17. Wanted Dead or Alive
  18. Roller Coaster
  19. Have a Nice Day
  20. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  21. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  22. Bad Medicine

Selected videos from Savannah

"Wanted Dead or Alive". Although this was played, it was actually listed as an audible (along with "I'll Be There For You") which is wild:

"American Reckoning". Electric version as the sit-down acoustic portion of the show was dropped for the first time this tour:

"It's My Life". Okay, this is gonna sound like massive shade but the backing vocals are great:

The grass is Greenville for Bon Jovi

Yeah, that was an awful pun and may or may not be my silly attempt at distracting you from the fact that I'm falling behind again. But hey, I work full time and spend a lot of that time in front of a computer screen so sometimes watching videos and blogging isn't necessarily my priority afterwards. I'm sure it's no skin off Jon's back. 😜

Anyway, show #6 of Bon Jovi's 2022 tour took us to Greenville -- which was actually the scene of the opening show of the This House Is Not For Sale Tour way back in 2017. Gosh, that feels like a lifetime ago.

Here's what happened in 2022...

Greenville, South Carolina, USA - April 11, 2022

  10. Just Older
  11. Let It Rain
  12. Keep the Faith
  13. American Reckoning - acoustic
  14. We Don't Run - acoustic
  15. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night - acoustic
  16. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  17. Lost Highway
  18. Roller Coaster
  19. Wanted Dead or Alive
  20. Have a Nice Day
  21. Livin' on a Prayer

    encore:
  22. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  23. Bad Medicine

Selected videos from Greenville

"I'll Be There For You". I mean, the voice is what it is. But the crowd "whoa-oh-ohs" are always cool:

"Keep the Faith". Phil X is fire and hands-down my favourite thing about live performances of this song:

"Born to Be My Baby". Jon can definitely still do his front man thang, I won't deny that:

"American Reckoning". Bruce Springsteen is quite possibly my favourite live act, so I have a real soft spot for the use of "The Promised Land" harmonica intro/outro. Actually, Jon cranking out the harmonica was one of my favourite things about this song anyway. And the "New Jersey vs Everybody" shirt is a nice touch, ha:

"Let It Rain" with another harmonica outro. Harmonica, more like HarJonica, amirite? Okay, that was terrible -- I'll shut up now and let you watch the video (with bonus David Bryan facial expressions):

"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is probably one of my less liked Keep the Faith tracks, but it's a fun song that made its tour debut in Charlotte:

"Story of Love". Big fan of this song, which made its tour premiere in Raleigh:

"Limitless". I'm still disappointed this was the lead single over "Beautiful Drug" but whatever. The song is okay and I don't mind it as the show opener:

"Someday I'll Be Saturday Night". Jon has a bit of a coughing fit in the middle of this performance but I'm fairly confident he hasn't re-contracted COVID. Anyway, I always dug the acoustic version of "Saturday Night" regardless of why they might be doing it that way now:
