Bon Jovi Reunion contest

As Jon mentioned at the recent concert in Indianapolis, Bon Jovi are holding a contest to perform live at your commencement ceremony this year. They will play "Reunion" and speak to the graduating class. This contest is open to students who are graduating from a US college in 2017.

To enter, tweet a photo of your favourite college memory with the hashtag #JBJreunioncontest and tag your school.

Watch Jon's announcement on MTVU. (Since it's an American contest, you can only view this video if you're in the US, or if you use a proxy. I originally embedded the video in this post but it autoplays and I find that annoying.)

Jon also spoke to GMA about the Reunion Contest ahead of tonight's concert in Detroit:

UPDATE 30/03/17: This new graduation-themed video set to "Reunion" was just uploaded to YouTube. In addition to footage of people celebrating their graduations, it features snippets of commencement speeches from late Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy, Indiana University graduate Parker Mantell, and former US President Barack Obama:

Jon Bon Jovi's Sex Sells listening party

Back in 1998, Jon Bon Jovi was making what was possibly going to be his third solo album, Sex Sells. This album later morphed into a band album and became what is now known as Crush.

A recording from a listening party, where fans were asked to rate potential tracks for Sex Sells, was recently uploaded to YouTube. The sound quality is not great and there are people talking over it, but fans will recognise some of the tracks as early versions of songs that were eventually released on Crush, on the 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong box set, as B-sides on singles, or (in the case of "Real Life") on the soundtrack for EDtv.

Listen to the recording here:

Here's the track list:

  1. Just Older
  2. Hush
  3. Save the World
  4. Shadow Dancing
  5. Good Ain't Good Enough
  6. Stay
  7. Real Life
  8. I Got the Girl
  9. You Can't Lose at Love
  10. Gimme Some
Thanks to the reader who alerted me to this. 🙂

Bon Jovi in Indianapolis 22/03/17

Bon Jovi took their This House Is Not For Sale Tour to Indianapolis, which is apparently their first concert in Indiana since 2003, when they did a half acoustic/half electric show. (If memory serves me, a planned 2013 concert in Indianapolis was cancelled.) Here's what was played in 2017:

Set list: Indianapolis, IN, USA - Bankers Life Fieldhouse - 22 March 2017

  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Knockout
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Whole Lot Of Leavin'
  6. Roller Coaster
  7. We Weren't Born To Follow
  8. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  9. We Got It Going On
  10. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  11. It's My Life
  12. We Don't Run
  13. God Bless This Mess
  14. Scars On This Guitar
  15. The Devil's In The Temple
  16. Lay Your Hands On Me
  17. Born To Be My Baby
  18. Have A Nice Day
  19. Bad Medicine
  20. Keep The Faith

    Encore:
  21. Reunion
  22. Wanted Dead Or Alive
  23. Livin' On A Prayer
"Reunion" was performed for the second time this tour.

Videos from Indianapolis

This video features the start of the encore after a longish wait, during which someone yells "Never Say Goodbye" (a song they should seriously think about including in the sets; I think Jon can sing the acoustic version without damaging himself). Anyway, Jon starts talking at 2:25, revealing that they're starting a campaign to come and play "Reunion" at graduation ceremonies in the US:

Bon Jovi in Phoenix 4/3/17

After a few days off, Bon Jovi continued their This House Is Not For Sale Tour in Phoenix, Arizona. According to the arena's Facebook page, the mayor of Phoenix henceforth declared March 4 "Bon Jovi Day". Here's what was played:

Set list: Phoenix, AZ, USA - Talking Stick Resort Arena - 4 March 2017
  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Knockout
  3. You Give Love A Bad Name
  4. Lost Highway
  5. Whole Lot Of Leavin
  6. We Weren't Born To Follow
  7. Roller Coaster
  8. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead / Jumpin' Jack Flash [Rolling Stones cover]
  9. We Got It Going On
  10. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  11. It's My Life
  12. We Don't Run
  13. God Bless This Mess
  14. Scars On This Guitar
  15. The Devil's In The Temple
  16. Lay Your Hands On Me
  17. Born To Be My Baby
  18. Have A Nice Day
  19. Bad Medicine
  20. Keep The Faith

    Encore:
  21. Because We Can
  22. Blood On Blood
  23. Wanted Dead Or Alive
  24. Livin' On A Prayer

Bit disappointed that "Living with the Ghost" was dropped after one show (but "Because We Can" is still in the encore? Really? 😕). Nice to see "Blood on Blood" back though.

A snippet of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was performed as part of a medley in "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" for the first time on this tour. At this point, just doing the "jukebox medley" every show and changing the cover songs in it would be a welcome surprise. I mean, I'd probably have a great time if I were physically at these shows, but there are plenty of fans who go to multiple shows on a tour and it sucks that they're very unlikely to get anything different at the moment.

UPDATE 5/3/17: "We Weren't Born to Follow" was dedicated to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly.

UPDATE 7/3/17: Bon Jovi had a reunion of sorts with Tico Torres' long-time drum tech Joe "JD" Dorosz, who had a stroke last year. Bon Jovi will match every donation to JD's GoFundMe page.

P.S. The first thing that comes up if you search Bon Jovi Phoenix on YouTube is this performance of "Living in Sin" from 1989. I try not to live in the past (or in this case, pretend to remember a past that occurred when I was only a few months old) but I don't think there's anything wrong with celebrating it... and I really wanted to post this video. Wow.
