Marty Schwartz interviews Phil X + alleged Richie Sambora investigation

I made a decision some time ago that I wanted this blog to be about the music. But it's been hard to avoid the tabloid fodder surrounding Richie Sambora, who is alleged to have made death threats towards Nikki Lund. From what I can tell, all the articles that have reported on this are just picking up the original Daily Mail "exclusive":
'They are in the midst of unraveling their fashion business Nikki Rich,' a source told Daily Mail Online. 'Things have become very bitter in recent weeks.

'The threat happened in the midst of Nikki launching her solo line. Richie apparently went mad on the phone at her and threatened to kill her.
'He said words to the effect that he was going to dig a hole in the desert and bury her.'

Nikki, a close childhood friend of Kim Kardashian, filed a report Wednesday night with detectives from the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

'She held off going to cops hoping that the situation would resolve itself,' added the source. But after advice from lawyers and business associates she made the report.

'Richie has been drinking heavily for months and acting erratically

'He has threatened violence in the past.'

Richie's people apparently told Asbury Park Press that Nikki's claims are payback for ending their fashion partnership:
"She's seeking publicity with these false allegations," said Sambora's rep. "They have been changing by the day."

Lund is the Kardashian pal that Sambora started to pal around with seven years ago. A romantic relationship ended yet the two continued to collaborate in the fashion world. Once Sambora decided to pull the plug on the unprofitable business relationship, that's when Lund made the charges, according to the rep.

"Mr. Sambora made the decision to stop any further funding of this unprofitable business," said the rep via email. "It fell on deaf ears. She continued making arrangements and commitments for him."

Things came to a head when Lund made a commitment for Sambora to appear at an LA Fashion Week envent on March 18, the rep said.

"Mr. Sambora did not attend the March 18 fashion show in an attempt to distance himself from this and to not mislead anyone. He has the right to pull out of the business," the rep said. "His not showing up seemed to be a surprise to a frantic Nikki Lund when it shouldn't have."

The company, Nikki Rich, has lost $4 million, the rep said, yet Sambora did offer to pay the company's 40 employees three months severance.

"She filed a cluster of lies 13 days later in retaliation for his no longer funding this unprofitable partnership," the rep said.

I think it's important to note that none of us know exactly what happened or what was said between Richie and Nikki, but if the goal was to further smear someone's reputation, it may well have succeeded.

On a more musical note, Marty Schwartz from Guitar Jamz recently met up with Phil X for a jam and guitar lesson. He also conducted this interview. In it, Phil talks about being a session guitarist; playing vintage guitars for Fretted Americana; getting the call-up to Bon Jovi; and recording a new album with his band, The Drills.

Richie Sambora fired from Bon Jovi tour: RumorFix

RumorFix has pulled another Richie Sambora "exclusive", with "sources" claiming he's been fired over money:
Guitarist Richie Sambora IS NOT returning to tour with Bon Jovi this year — he’s been fired from the tour, RumorFix has learned exclusively.

Sources close to the band tell us it’s all about money. We are told just like any DIVORCE, their differences are irreconcilable.

Richie, who has been a member of the band for 30 years, was making $2 million a month and 20 percent of the profits after each show. His replacement Philip ‘Phil X’ Xenidis is only making $10,000 a month.

But don’t think Richie is going broke — since he co-wrote most of the songs and since his likeness appears on merchandise, he continues to get royalty checks.

Our source says, “Richie wants to go back on stage — that’s his first love. He’s really upset over the news.”
An alleged dispute over money is not new (TMZ claimed it was the reason for Richie's departure in early April) although Phil better be making a lot more than $10k/month for this gig.

For what it's worth, if anyone thought or hoped Richie was going to be back on tour in September, Nikki Lund's blog suggests he'll be busy promoting their fashion label then.

Matt Bongiovi commented on the latest RumorFix article via Twitter.

Hmm, is he trying to bait Nikki and or NikkiRich Clothing's PR guy Sean Borg?

EDIT: Matt is apparently closing his Twitter account, while Phil has set the record straight about the pitiful pay package RumorFix gave him.

Come Back As Me: New Richie Sambora song

Just as Bon Jovi takes a six-week touring break, Richie Sambora unleashes a previously-unreleased track on the world called Come Back As Me, via his fashion partner-in-crime Nikki Lund:

Listen to COME BACK AS ME - by Richie Sambora

Here are the lyrics that I could make out... Corrections welcome:

What do you want me to say?
I'll tell you anything you wanna know
You wanna know about disappointment
Baby, I haven't watched that show
I been up, I been down
You seen me crawl with my face on the ground
All this pain, this pride
I carry around like a knife in my side

In spite of it all, for all that you see
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me
Rewind and press play, I'll burn up the screen
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me

Hey, what do you want me to say?
I gave you everything I could give
But everything just wasn't enough
So I just let live and let live
I got lost, I got found
Break my heart but it don't make a sound
Hard times, bad luck
I've had my share but it's turnin' around
Grateful for the burden even before it felt good
So here's my revelation, won't be misunderstood

In spite of it all, I'm comic relief
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me
Rewind and press play, I'll burn up the screen
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me

(Turn it up, baby)

Grateful for the burden, even before it felt good
So here's my revelation, I won't be misunderstood

In spite of it all, for all that you see
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me
Not Elvis or God
Not Frankie, not Dean
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me
In spite of it all, for all that you see
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me
Not Elvis or God
Not Frankie, not Dean
If I died tomorrow, I'd come back as me

I think the song is an outtake from the Aftermath of the Lowdown sessions. It was written before all this drama surrounding Bon Jovi and Richie's departure from the tour began. But given the timing of its release, the reference to Jon's idol Frank Sinatra, and tweets like this...

...it's a little hard not to read it as a dig at Jon.

What do you think of the track (and everything else)?

Richie Sambora speaks (finally)... to RumorFix

It's taken almost three months, but we've finally heard (as opposed to read and wondered) something from Richie Sambora's mouth about why the heck he isn't on tour with Bon Jovi. He spoke to RumorFix at a party for his clothing line Nikki Rich. Richie indicated that there were "family issues" (the family being his band) but he is confident everything will work out and he'll be back at some point later in the tour. He also got particularly defensive about any suggestion that he wasn't part of Bon Jovi anymore.

Richie Sambora On Return To Bon Jovi -- Exclusive

The sound is not great but this interview would indicate there has been some kind of dispute with Jon or the band from Richie's perspective, even though Jon has said they didn't have a fight and Richie just didn't show up in Calgary. I summarised what we had managed to glean about Samboragate at the end of May.

So.... Thoughts?

NikkiRich performance

This is Richie Sambora and Nikki Lund performing How to Love and Do You Like My Ass in These Pants? from last month's Nikki Rich fashion launch.

Not too keen on the music (unless it's MEANT to be funny, lol)... but Richie's voice sounds alright.

Project Richie

When the Bon Jovi tour is over, one of the points of focus becomes each member's side projects. Like, are we going to get any solo albums? Apparently our Mr. Bluesman Richie Sambora mentioned a solo album during his live webcast with Nikki Lund but I missed it and some people commented that it he may have just said it to appease everyone.

I could crack my favourite North Korean Democracy joke but I already did that 2+ years ago. Richie did say something about writing new songs when he dropped by Norman's Rare Guitars recently so I guess we'll have to wait and see what (if anything) comes of that.

Speaking of Richie and Nikki, they'll be performing together at the Rock Fashion show and debuting their new line NikkiRich. The show will take place at Station Hollywood on Wednesday, October 5 and you can get tickets here with proceeds going to charity.

New music from Richie Sambora and Nikki Lund

Richie and Nikki's fashion collaboration is also a musical one. Well, kind of. You can check out White Trash Beautiful's songs at their website. The two tracks up at the moment: White Trash Beautiful and Crazy. While I don't wish to prejudice you before listening, I will suggest you take the songs for what they are: shallow dance-pop tracks written for the catwalk. In other words, it's not supposed to be Stranger In This Town or Undiscovered Soul so don't take it too seriously. ;)

Here are the lyrics I heard... I'm pretty sure I've got some wrong, so if you're one of the people who managed to listen to the whole thing without suffering some kind of meltdown, please feel free correct me. ;)

Crazy:
C-R-A-Z-Y
C-R-A-Z-Y
C-R-A-Z-Y
C-R-A-Z-Y

I'm lookin' in the mirror
Puttin' on lipstick
You know I taste good
You wanna lick it
Get a couple in me
I'm anything I wanna be
I'm not broken
Don't try to fix me

I'm gonna go out
Let it rip, trip the shit
Kick and blow out
Kiss my lips and I
It's true that it don't mean a thing to me
I'm gonna rock this show out

You can't fix C-R-A-Z-Y (C-R-A-Z-Y)
Touch me, you know my (C-R-A-Z-Y)
Body will start to rock (rock)
Rock (rock)
Rock (rock)
(Rock, rock)

C-R-A-Z-Y
C-R-A-Z-Y
C-R-A-Z-Y
C-R-A-Z-Y

Damn you're so hot
You're makin' my ice cream
I wanna own you
And where have you been?
Open your mouth and whisper what you wanna do
You get two words
And it's "Do you?"

I'm gonna go out
Let it rip, trip the shit
Kick and blow out
Kiss my lips and I
It's true that it don't mean a thing to me
I'm gonna rock this show out

You can't fix C-R-A-Z-Y (C-R-A-Z-Y)

White Trash Beautiful:
Own it, wear your sexuality
Don't be afraid of it 'cause it's reality
You have it so work it, you gotta be
You know what they wanna see
It's White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful

I make love like a porn star
Take a shower, go to work in
Lip gloss, flip flops, jeans and a T-shirt
I'm drinkin' Vertigo
I can be fabulous
But I like a beer
You bet that can kick your ass
It's just an attitude
It's just a look
I'm the exception to the rule

I'm White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)
I'm wicked irresistible
Sexy, unpredictable
Hot but I kick it cool
I'm White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)

If you're a housewife, a movie star
When you get home at night
You kick off your shoes and tell your man to dim the lights
Your clothes on the floor behind the bedroom door
'Cause inside we all are

I'm White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)
I'm wicked irresistible
Sexy, unpredictable
Hot but I kick it cool
I'm White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)

Own it, wear your sexuality
Don't be afraid of it 'cause it's reality
You have it so work it, you gotta be
You know what they wanna see
It's White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful

[guitar solo]

It's just an attitude
It's just a look
I'm the exception to the rule
I'm White Trash Beautiful
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)
I'm wicked irresistible
Sexy, unpredictable
Hot but I kick it cool
I'm White Trash Beautiful (beautiful)
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)
I'm White Trash Beautiful (beautiful)
White Trash Beautiful (we are, we are)

Sambora/Lund/Art imitating fashion

So we know that Richie Sambora and Nikki Lund have been collaborating on the White Trash Beautiful fashion label as well as some new music. According to Billboard, they have completed 10 tracks and there are more on the way:
In addition to the fashion collaboration, the pair created an original soundtrack for their runway show. "You will hear a song called 'This Could Be The Night Tonight,' where one of the main hooks is, 'Do you like my ass in these pants?'" Sambora tells Billboard.com. "So obviously, the fashion influenced the music."
Richie goes on to add that his music with Nikki is nothing like Bon Jovi's and describes it as "gorilla dance music". Read the full article here.

I'm trying to avoid rushing to judgment but I have to say, based on that article alone, it doesn't sound particularly inspiring. But hey, it's his life. :P And I could end up being pleasantly surprised.

White Trash Beautiful interviews

At the White Trash Beautiful Spring 2011 fashion show, our favourite guitar god turned fashion designer Richie Sambora spoke exclusively to Hollyscoop about Ava:
“It’s so much fun,” Sambora said of working with Ava, who is one of WTB’s models. “I did a photo shoot with her a few years ago. I just said to the photographer, “Can you take some pictures for me, for my house of my daughter?’ And she went ‘Dad can I model?’

“The only modeling she has really done has been at my shows. That is where we are right now--her priorities are schoolwork and also I believe in maintaining the innocence of children. Before that when she is 18 or 19 she is going to do what she wants to do and I’m going to support her and help her through it.”

Extra also caught up with Richie and Nikki Lund... check it out at this link if you have trouble with the embedded video.

So there's a WTB men's line a-coming...

There's also an interview with Ava on the PEOPLE website:
“I’m still nervous I just know how to hide it,” she admitted. “It’s like I really hope I’m not gonna trip, but now I’m a little more comfortable with it.”

White Trash Beautiful song? + Billboard tour awards

Cheers to Hath and samboragirl for the heads-up.

A video has been posted on the White Trash Beautiful blog in the lead-up to LA Fashion Week. Check it out. You can hear what Nikki Lund has confirmed is their fashion show theme song entitled "White Trash Beautiful".

We know the WTB clothing line was born after a song Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora abandoned, called "White Trash Beautiful". And Richie has said he and Nikki are working on some music together. Is this a rejigged version of that original song?

Oh, and Bon Jovi are among the finalists for the 2010 Billboard Top Touring Awards:
Bon Jovi, U2, AC/DC, Lady GaGa, Brad Paisley, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are among the top finalists for the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards, which will be handed out in New York on Nov. 4. The awards - which honor artists, tours, venues, and live entertainment firms - are primarily based on global box office numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore from Oct. 1, 2009, through Sept. 30, 2010.
Bon Jovi is competing with U2 and AC/DC for the Top Tour and Top Draw awards. Read the full article here.

3 new Bon Jovi related articles

Here's a review of Bon Jovi's first night in Montreal, by T'Cha Dunlevy for The Gazette:
There are certain things you can count on. Bon Jovi in Montreal is one of them. The New Jersey rock act was in town last night for the first of two shows at the Bell Centre, and the party was on from the opening song.

An interview with Nikki Lund, whom our guitar god Richie Sambora collaborated with on new women's clothing line White Trash Beautiful:
It was a title to a song that Richie and Jon [Bon Jovi] had done, but they felt it was a little misogynistic. At some point Richie said to me, "That sounds like a clothing line" and it just went from there. And that's also what we're calling our musical collaboration right now too.
Ava Sambora also made her modelling debut as White Trash Beautiful was unveiled at LA Fashion Week last night. Check out the full interview here and some photos from the event here.

Bon Jovi are headed back to Philadelphia after their Montreal. Here's an article by Gary R. Blockus for The Morning Call:
When Bon Jovi takes to the stage at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia next week, fans will find something familiar and reassuring in a band that is entering its fourth decade of performing.
