Hey God in Anaheim

The jaw-dropping magic moment from the second Anaheim show on February 27, 2010.

HEY GOD - Great to see this one. I hope it gets more outings during the tour because I expect Jon's voice to get stronger (It takes him a little while to "warm up") and it fits with the working class theme they're trying to portray. And it's just a great rockin' song.

Apparently Jon told the crowd that Bon Jovi hadn't played "Hey God" in 12 years. He is mistaken; it was played a few times on the Lost Highway Tour, the last time being in Barcelona on June 1, 2008. But prior to that it was played in 2001, which is still a pretty long time between drinks (not quite 12 years, but Jon's a singer, not a mathematician).

Modern technology sure is a wonderful thing. Bon Jovi played on a round stage with a small semi-circular catwalk, within which was filled with rows of people who paid a pretty penny for VIP packages. But my eyes were often glued overhead: I’d never seen anyone utilize screens in a similar way before. They came together, multiplied and changed shape. Additional panels morphed into makeshift stairs when Jon briefly gave fans behind the stage his undivided attention.

Yet the music is still what matters most, and this veteran New Jersey group turned in a mostly satisfying two hour, 15-minute performance that sounded great at the Honda. The still boyish-looking frontman (who turns 48 on Tuesday) was happy-go-lucky during a smattering of big ’80s hits and appropriately serious amid selections from latest studio album.

Anaheim 2nd night set list

Still no song from the first two albums and "Keep the Faith" (which I would personally take over "We Got It" any day of week) was dropped. But we did get some changes from the previous night -- including the addition of one of my favourites, "Hey God" which made its tour debut. Definitely going to be on the lookout for that on YouTube!

Anaheim 1st night set list

A lot of diehard fans following the play-by-play were pretty disappointed by the first show in California tonight. After apologising for playing the same set in a slightly different order in San Jose and Glendale, and promising:

1 song from first album one from 7800 tomorrow same saturday. just different songs....jbj 9:25 AM Feb 26th via web (That's Feb 26 my time, which was the 25th over there)

....what we got was the exact same set as in Glendale, in the same order, minus "Lost Highway".

Presumably the "production" problems Jon cited in his tweets were still plaguing the band. (Either that or Jon is a filthy liar, but I try to see the good in people :P ). I for one would rather the focus be on the music than the flashy screens. As I tweeted during the PBP of this deja vu set:

EDIT: According to Mike Rew and BonJovi.com "Get Ready" was played between "Bad Name" and "Baby" which improves the set somewhat. But I wasn't alone in interpreting Jon's tweet to mean there would be one song from each of the first two albums. And my comment about music over production still stands.

LH Magic Memory #23: Garageland in Anaheim

Magic Memory #23 from the Lost Highway tour takes us to the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The date is April 5, 2008 when a gem from the 2004 box set 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong is being played for only the fourth time.

To be honest, I was going to review the Toronto performance of "Garageland" from March 12 (the first time it was played this tour) but couldn't find a complete embeddable video of it. Jon's speech at the beginning of this Anaheim video is funnier though. ;)



"Garageland" is one of those songs that sounds better live than on the recording, particularly on the Lost Highway tour with Jon's superior vocals. It also has more energy live. That said, if it's an outtake from Crush -- Obie O'Brien and the band admit they didn't keep great records so we can't be sure when most of the box set material was written/recorded -- I wish it had made the album. It's a cool rocking song that segues beautifully into "Just Older".
