  17. Blood on Blood
  18. Bad Medicine

    Encore:
  19. Wanted Dead or Alive

"Knockout" was back (*sigh*), and only two This House Is Not For Sale songs were played.

Bon Jovi in Charlotte 21/04/18

Bon Jovi's Charlotte show brought a couple more surprises. "Living with the Ghost" was played for only the second time on the This House Is Not For Sale Tour, and the first time this year. "Raise Your Hands" also made its 2018 debut, while "Make a Memory" was back in the set. Here's what was played:

Charlotte, NC, USA - Spectrum Center - April 21, 2018
  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Raise Your Hands
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  5. Lost Highway

  7. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  8. It's My Life

Bon Jovi in Atlanta 20/04/18

Bon Jovi's Atlanta show brought with it a couple of changes. "In These Arms" and "New Year's Day" were played for the first time this year, the latter replacing "God Bless This Mess". "We Don't Run" stayed in the spot that "Knockout" had occupied for most of the tour (which is fine by me, since I've said a few times that "Knockout" is my least favourite song on This House Is Not For Sale).

Here's the full set list:

Atlanta, GA, USA - Philips Arena - April 20, 2018

  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. We Don't Run
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  5. Lost Highway
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  8. It's My Life
  9. We Weren't Born to Follow
  10. Runaway
  11. We Got It Going On
  12. Keep the Faith
  13. Amen
  14. Bed of Roses
  15. Lay Your Hands on Me
  16. New Year's Day
  17. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  18. Bad Medicine

    Encore:
  19. In These Arms
  20. Wanted Dead or Alive
  21. Livin' on a Prayer
Videos from Atlanta

"In These Arms". In the same way that I don't really understand why Bobby Bandiera used to play the solo for this song when you had Richie Sambora in the band, I don't know why John Shanks is playing it now when Phil X is there... No disrespect intended to Bob or Shanks. As for Jon's voice, it is what it is; I remain hopeful he can turn it around like he did in 2008, but accept that may not be the case. It's still nice to see "In These Arms" in the set:

Fresh from their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (and apparently sipping themed cocktails at the after-party), Bon Jovi resumed the tour in Orlando. "We Don't Run" was played for the first time this year, replacing "Knockout". A snippet of "Sympathy for the Devil" was thrown in, "Runaway" made another apperaance, and a few other songs were shuffled around. Here's the full set list:

Orlando, FL, USA - Amway Center - April 18, 2018

  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. We Don't Run
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  5. Lost Highway
  6. Born to Be My Baby
  7. Who Says You Can't Go Home

  16. God Bless This Mess
  17. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

Bon Jovi gets into the Rock Hall

Bon Jovi was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2018 on April 14.

Then & now: Dave, Alec, Jon, Tico, Richie.
Photo: David Bergman.
Howard Stern's hilarious, NSFW speech included such glorious soundbites as "Bon Jovi beats sperm". After Howard's introduction, the inducted band members each got to speak. Alec John Such went first, followed by Hugh McDonald, Richie Sambora, Tico Torres, David Bryan, and finally Jon Bon Jovi. The speeches ranged from the emotional to the nostalgic to the outright funny.

Everyone (the members who were inducted, plus Phil X, John Shanks, and Everett Bradley) took to the stage together, although I think Alec only played on "Livin' on a Prayer". The following songs were performed:
  1. You Give Love a Bad Name
  2. It's My Life
  3. When We Were Us
  4. Livin' on a Prayer
I know Jon wanted to do a new song but "When We Were Us" was still a bit unexpected and, as far as I'm aware, a pretty unconventional choice for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (artists usually stick to their hits or most influential songs). It was great to hear Richie's harmonies though, and to see him and Jon singing from the same microphone.

The official HBO telecast of the induction ceremony will air on May 5. Hopefully those of us not in the US will be able to watch it too.

In the meantime, there are some unofficial streams from fans in attendance, including this one:

"Wanted Dead or Alive" was conspicuously absent, but Richie did perform it at the Rock Hall the previous weekend to kick off induction week:

In case you missed it, Bon Jovi and the Moody Blues had made an appearance at the Rock Hall the day before the ceremony, with Jon giving a speech saying, "We're thrilled, we're honoured, and it's about f***ing time".

The red carpet, including Bon Jovi's arrival and interviews with Jon and Richie, was also live streamed:

Now I know there are plenty of fans who have harboured varying degrees of discontent with the state of Bon Jovi over the past few years. I'd be lying if I said I was completely happy about everything. But tonight that didn't matter. (I won't speak for anyone else, but it didn't matter to me.) Tonight was a celebration of what Bon Jovi's music has meant to me for so long. All the times they lifted me up, consoled me, saved me. And that history won't change, no matter what happens going forward.

Richie Sambora was evidently at the Prudential Center but didn't make an appearance on stage.

Richie was recently interviewed by Billboard ahead of Bon Jovi's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, among other things, he talked about rehearsing with the original lineup:
What has it been like rehearsing with the rest of Bon Jovi? It must bring back memories.
RS: We played live to millions of people over 31 years. Do I miss it? No -- but the memories are good. It feels great to see everybody. We already rehearsed and it was wonderful, it wasn't awkward. The chemistry came back very quickly; it’s matrixed into our muscle memory at this point. If you’re on the road performing and touring for 30 years, [the Rock Hall ceremony] is just another cycle -- and it’s a good one, so here we go.
You can read the full interview with Richie and Orianthi (The interview also covers RSO's upcoming album) here.

Bon Jovi releases Walls music video

Bon Jovi's music video for "Walls" -- the second new track on the re-release of This House Is Not For Sale -- has dropped exclusively on Tidal. When Jon was on Facebook Live last year, he alluded to one of the new songs being shaped by the current political climate, and the "Walls" video reflects that. John Shanks and Everett Bradley, who were both in the video for "When We Were Us", are in this one as well. They've also appeared on tour merchandise but as far as I'm aware they're not considered "official" band members. On the other hand, Hugh McDonald was left out of a lot of videos and promotional materials until he was made official in 2016. So that's... interesting.

Anyway, if you've paid for a Tidal subscription (or you're still within the free trial period) you can watch "Walls" below or at this link:

If you're not a subscriber, you'll just get a preview, but when the whole video makes its way to YouTube in a couple of weeks' time, I'll add the link to this post.

UPDATE 2/04/18: The official "Walls" video is now on YouTube:

Bon Jovi in Salt Lake City 16/03/18 + Phil X's real name

Bon Jovi took their This House Is Not For Sale Tour to Salt Lake City, where Hugh McDonald's stepson Jake was the opening act, performing with his band Jake J and the Killjoys.

Bon Jovi's set list was... exactly the same as that of the previous show in Denver. One key difference was John Shanks messing up the beginning of "We Weren't Born to Follow", which resulted in Jon restarting the first verse and chorus as an acoustic piece. (There's a video of it below.) Said acoustic version turned out to be way better than the original IMO, and I kind of wish he'd done the whole song like that.

Salt Lake City, UT, USA - Vivint Smart Home Arena - March 16, 2018
  1. This House Is Not For Sale
  2. Knockout
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  5. Lost Highway
  6. When We Were Us
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  9. It's My Life
  10. We Weren't Born to Follow
  11. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  12. We Got It Going On
  13. Keep the Faith
  14. Amen
  15. Bed of Roses
  16. Lay Your Hands on Me
  17. God Bless This Mess
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Bad Medicine

    Encore:
  20. I Love This Town
  21. Wanted Dead or Alive
  22. Livin' on a Prayer
This show happened to take place on Everett Bradley's birthday, which the band acknowledged when he got on the plane.

Videos from Salt Lake City

"We Weren't Born to Follow" (acoustic part):

"It's My Life". Probably one of the better performances of this in quite some time. Jon wasn't glued to one spot and he went for some high notes. I'm keeping the faith that the JBJ we know and love is on his way back:

UPDATE 18/03/18: "Bed of Roses":

If you'd like to share any videos from Salt Lake City, feel free to link to them in the comments. 🙂

I'm going to leave the final word on this post to Phil X. If you frequent Wikipedia, specifically the Phil X article, you may have seen his name listed as Philip Eric Xenidis. That isn't his name, however, as he confirmed earlier:

Bon Jovi in Denver 14/03/18 + How Hugh McDonald became a Rock Hall inductee

It's been almost six months since Bon Jovi were last on the road for their This House Is Not For Sale Tour. The band kicked off this leg of the tour in Denver, to make up for last year's scheduled show which got postponed then cancelled. Here's what was played:

Denver, CO, USA - Pepsi Center - March 14, 2018
  1. This House is Not For Sale
  2. Knockout
  3. You Give Love a Bad Name
  4. Whole Lot of Leavin'
  5. Lost Highway
  6. When We Were Us
  7. Born to Be My Baby
  8. Who Says You Can't Go Home
  9. It's My Life
  10. We Weren't Born to Follow
  11. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
  12. We Got it Going on
  13. Keep the Faith
  14. Amen
  15. Bed of Roses
  16. Lay Your Hands on Me
  17. God Bless This Mess
  18. Have a Nice Day
  19. Bad Medicine

    Encore:
  20. I Love This Town
  21. Wanted Dead or Alive
  22. Livin' on a Prayer

While the band has played "When We Were Us" twice before, this marked its debut as part of a tour. It was also the first time "Amen" and "I Love This Town" have been played since the Because We Can Tour in 2013. I'd personally hoped the latter had been put to bed for good, but obviously not. 😛

Videos from Denver
Taylor streamed the concert live on Facebook from part way through "Lost Highway" to the start of "Wanted Dead or Alive":

Bon Jovi's next stop is Utah, where Hugh McDonald and his wife Kelli live. The Deseret News published an article about Huey ahead of the concert; it talks about Hugh's history with Jon and how Jon pushed for Hugh to be inducted into the Rock Hall with Bon Jovi:
“Jon was good enough at Christmastime to surprise me by sending me a framed copy of the email that he sent to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, telling them my history in the band over the years and that I deserved to be in with them. I can’t even explain how much it means to me,” McDonald said with audible emotion.
The story of how Hugh winged it as Poison bassist for a night is also discussed. Read the full article at this link.

Jon Bon Jovi debuts THINFS bonus tracks; teases Australia/Japan tour

This is kind of a "catch up on things I didn't have time to post about before" post before the resumption of the This House Is Not For Sale Tour.

First of all, Jon Bon Jovi did a solo Runaway Tours show at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on February 26, 2018. I know that was over a fortnight ago, but hey, I was busy. I don't always post about the Runaway Tours gigs but this one was worth mentioning because it included the live debuts of This House Is Not For Sale bonus tracks "I Will Drive You Home" and "Color Me In".

Here's "Living in Sin" and "Color Me In":

Jon also attempted "Silent Night" but couldn't remember any of it. 😁

He seemed to get emotional when talking about how hard he's working on his voice in response to a fan's question:

I didn't see a video of "I Will Drive You Home" from this show, but Jon did perform it again at a Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation benefit concert at New York's Tarrytown Music Hall on March 4. Here's a partial video of "I Will Drive Your Home" from that show:

JBJ & Friends played "Color Me In" again at the benefit show, which I'm going to post because it's a pretty good video:

Jon confirmed during the Vegas gig that there'd be no European tour this year (which we'd kind of figured out). He did casually mention going to Australia and Japan when interviewed by ExtraTV (on the red carpet for the recent iHeartRadio Music Awards) though:

Anyway, the Bon Jovi tour kicks off again tonight in Denver.

Bon Jovi at 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards

Bon Jovi was honoured with the inaugural Icon Award at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards. They also performed "It's My Life" and "You Give Love a Bad Name". I was at work when the award ceremony was taking place so I had to catch up later.

Here's Olympic snowboarder Shaun White introducing Bon Jovi:

Jon Bon Jovi's acceptance speech (the rest of the current lineup was on stage but didn't speak):

Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan, and Tico Torres on the red carpet, being interviewed about their 'Icon' status:

Bon Jovi performing "It's My Life" and "You Give Love a Bad Name":

After reading people's comments about how awful Jon sounded, this actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Not that it was particularly great, either. I don't know if he's done permanent damage somewhere along the line, but he appears to have a vocal coach again so I'm hoping he can get back to sounding consistently good.

Bon Jovi releases When We Were Us & Walls + When We Were Us music video + live on Colbert

The re-release of Bon Jovi's This House Is Not For Sale album, featuring new tracks "When We Were Us" and "Walls" is out now. You can download or stream the album on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, and more via this link. I was pleased to find that I could purchase the new songs individually without having to buy the whole album again.

I did, however, renew my Tidal subscription just so I could watch the new "When We Were Us" music video, which dropped exclusively on Tidal today. If you're a subscriber, you can watch it below.

When We Were Us

The video features shots of the current lineup interspersed with footage from previous tours (mostly Lost Highway and The Circle/Greatest Hits tours from what I can tell). When it's up on YouTube (probably in two or three weeks, if the previous THINFS videos were any indication), I'll update this post with the link.

UPDATE 5/03/18: The video for "When We Were Us" is now on YouTube:

Bon Jovi's performance of "When We Were Us" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert also went to air. In my previous blog post, I referred to the iHeartRadio performance as the live debut of "When We Were Us". Technically the Colbert performance was the live debut, because it was recorded back in January, but the iHeartRadio gig was the first chance anyone who wasn't at the Colbert taping got to hear "When We Were Us" live. I reckon Jon sounded better on Colbert than he did at iHeartRadio, but you can be the judge of that.

Bon Jovi at iHeartRadio 21/02/18

Bon Jovi played a gig for iHeartRadio in New York which was streamed live on the web. It was a Thursday where I am and I was at work so I couldn't watch it as it was happening, but I did catch up later on. "When We Were Us", which will be on the re-release of This House Is Not For Sale, made its live debut.

Jon said he's had contact with Richie Sambora and Alec John Such and they're looking forward to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

It was also announced Bon Jovi will receive the iHeartRadio Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 11.

Here's the full concert:

RSO releases I Got You Babe & Forever All the Way

RSO has dropped some more new tunes. One is a Richie Sambora-led original, "Forever All the Way", which I really liked on the first listen. The other is a cover of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe", which RSO has been teasing for a long time, even describing themselves as "Sonny & Cher on steroids" on numerous occasions since getting together. Given Richie dated Cher after she divorced Sonny Bono, I always found the comparison a little odd but that's not my thing to judge. 😉 I will say that I enjoyed RSO's version of the song a lot more than I'd expected to.

The new tracks came out on February 9 and were billed as a Valentine's Day present to fans, presumably because they're both love songs.

You can buy (download) or stream "I Got You Babe" and "Forever All the Way" via this link.

You can also listen to them on YouTube.

Bon Jovi on Colbert

Jon Bon Jovi was just on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert two nights in a row (January 16 and 17). First to do this interview, in which he discussed:

Watch the full interview:

On the second night, Jon returned with Bon Jovi to perform "You Give Love a Bad Name":

I read somewhere that they also recorded a performance of their new song "When We Were US" that's slated for broadcast around the time the single is officially released, but maybe someone can confirm this?

Howard Stern to induct Bon Jovi into Rock Hall; debuts When We Were US

Jon Bon Jovi appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM Radio on January 17. During the show, it was announced that Howard Stern will be the one to induct Bon Jovi into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April. "When We Were US", a new Bon Jovi single that will be released on February 23, was also played for the first time on the show. Here's the song in full, recorded from the broadcast:

What do you think?

I'm not subscribed to Sirius XM but there are some clips from the interview on Howard's website.

Here's Jon telling the story of asking Howard to induct the band into the Rock Hall:

Jon Bon Jovi on The Moment with Brian Koppelman

Jon Bon Jovi & Brian Koppelman
(Photo: @briankoppelman/Instagram)
Jon Bon Jovi was recently interviewed by Brian Koppelman for his podcast The Moment. The episode aired on January 9, 2018.

In the hour-long interview, Jon talked about:
  • getting his start playing in bar bands as a teenager and working at Power Station Studios;
  • how "Runaway" came to fruition;
  • burning out and gradually learning to appreciate special moments in his career;
  • how the original Bon Jovi band was formed;
  • his songwriting process, including how he and Richie Sambora complemented each other as songwriters;
  • the importance of the arts;
  • the gaping hole left by Richie on the Because We Can Tour and 2015 Asian Tour and how others, especially David Bryan, stepped up;
  • Bon Jovi's influences versus the hard rock bands they opened for early in their career;
  • collaborating with Desmond Child and later Billy Falcon;
  • the validation of finally getting into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame;
  • his upcoming business venture: making wine with his son Jesse.
Jon also said Bon Jovi intends to play 30 shows in March, and is planning to tour on a smaller scale from now on (long breaks, fewer stadiums). They still haven't announced tour dates though, so if it's going ahead in March, they're leaving it pretty late. (The interview was conducted in December, I believe.)

*UPDATE 11/1/18: North American dates have been announced for March, April and May 2018. The new version of This House Is Not For Sale, featuring additional tracks "Walls" and "When We Were Us" will be released on February 23.*

This was Jon's first podcast interview (not including radio interviews that were later made available as podcasts) and I thought it was pretty good. Jon seems more relaxed and candid than he has been in the past. And there's some swearing but nothing you haven't heard before. 😉

You can listen to The Moment podcast on iTunes.
