Videos from Montreal

Bon Jovi played a couple of nights at Montreal's Bell Centre on February 18 and February 19. So how about a few videos to whet the appetite for Madison Square Garden? ;)

The Radio Saved My Life Tonight

Chorus will always lack the power of the studio version when it's dropped an octave, but this is still one of my favourite songs. Maybe even my favourite performance of it.

Living in Sin / Chapel of Love

I'm a bit filthy this wasn't on the Greatest Hits. It was a top 10 Billboard single, which is more than I can say for a lot of other inclusions.

Love's the Only Rule

Love. This. Song. Although Jon starts off with a two-minute speech about the protests in the Middle East; I don't mind this personally, but I know a lot of people get jacked off when rock concerts get "political", even when the artist is well known for their politics.

Dry County

Many of you know I'm incapable of complaining about "Dry County". ;)

Last Man Standing / You Give Love a Bad Name

Focuses on the main stage, so no Jon for "Last Man Standing".

Blood on Blood (acoustic; partial)

Start Me Up / Jumpin' Jack Flash / Dancing in the Street / I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

Twitter trivia contest for North American fans

If you tweet, and you live in the US or Canada, follow @BonJovi and start answering some trivia questions to win tickets to a show in March or May:
You can win tickets to the Bon Jovi 2011 tour by answering any of the trivia questions that we ask on Twitter ! Keep reading for details!

Bon Jovi's Twitter account, @BonJovi, will be asking 1 trivia question a day starting at 12pm PST on Monday, February 21, and will continue doing so until Friday, February 25. Answer any of the 5 questions in order to be entered to WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO THE BON JOVI TOUR!

Be sure to reply @BonJovi to the tweet with your answer and the city nearest you to the trivia questions with the hashtag #BonJoviTrivia (i.e. "@BonJovi My answer - Los Angeles #BonJoviTrivia"). Each response will be noted and a random winner will be chosen to win the prize of 1 pair of tickets to the nearest Bon Jovi show. Good Luck!
The website says to reply with #BonJoviTrivia as the hashtag, but Bon Jovi's Twitter account says to RT (retweet) with #BonJoviGiveaway -- so I'd probably use the #BonJoviGiveaway hashtag instead.

Also, if they're asking one question a day for five days, then wouldn't you need to answer all the questions, as opposed to "any of the 5"?

Anyway, the first question asked was "For which song has Bon Jovi won a Grammy?" and the answer is of course "Who Says You Can't Go Home?". Best of luck with the competition if you're entering.

The eligible dates are:
  • March 9, 2011 - Chicago, IL - United Center
  • March 17, 2011 - San Antonio, TX - AT&T Center

Montreal 2 set list

The Second Night Rule applied, with Bon Jovi's second show in Montreal producing a more exciting set than the first (though in all fairness, the first night actually wasn't that shabby either). Great to see "Happy Now" again, along with "Love's the Only Rule", "Radio", "Living in Sin", and "Blood on Blood" in a non-opening slot. Looks like Jon was in a Mick Jagger mood tonight, with two Rolling Stones covers plus a song that was recorded by Jagger and David Bowie weaved into "Sleep".

Sambora/Lund/Art imitating fashion

So we know that Richie Sambora and Nikki Lund have been collaborating on the White Trash Beautiful fashion label as well as some new music. According to Billboard, they have completed 10 tracks and there are more on the way:
In addition to the fashion collaboration, the pair created an original soundtrack for their runway show. "You will hear a song called 'This Could Be The Night Tonight,' where one of the main hooks is, 'Do you like my ass in these pants?'" Sambora tells Billboard.com. "So obviously, the fashion influenced the music."
Richie goes on to add that his music with Nikki is nothing like Bon Jovi's and describes it as "gorilla dance music". Read the full article here.

I'm trying to avoid rushing to judgment but I have to say, based on that article alone, it doesn't sound particularly inspiring. But hey, it's his life. :P And I could end up being pleasantly surprised.

There's also a pretty glowing review in the Montreal Gazette:
There has to be a new, concert-related repetitive-stress injury around the corner. One that involves pumping your fist in the air hundreds of times in a short time period. And when they get around to calling it something, they might as well name it after Bon Jovi.

In the first of two sold-out shows at the Bell Centre last night, Jon Bon Jovi and his New Jersey arena-rockers had 21,000 fists -double that number for some songs -pushing upward along with the insistent 4/4 beats and anthemic hooks.

Toronto vids: Thank You For Loving Me, Superman Tonight, My Funny Valentine

A few choice videos from Bon Jovi's first of two shows in Toronto (February 14, 2011). Bit of a Valentine's Day theme. ;)

Thank You For Loving Me

Not one of their massive ballads in terms of sales and popularity, but it does make sense to play it on Valentine's Day given it's actually about loving someone you're currently with, as opposed to all their 90s ballads. :P I have to admit, this would not feature in my request list, but I wouldn't pass up the chance to hear it live either. It was a pleasant surprise and sounds pretty good.

Superman Tonight (acoustic)

Wow. Just. Wow. Absolutely gorgeous arrangement and emotional delivery. I'm a big fan of The Circle but I think this version tops the one on the album.

My Funny Valentine

Toronto 2 set list

Some nice inclusions for Bon Jovi's second night in Toronto, but I'd say this is one of the times when the first show of a multiple-show city was actually better. Way too many Lost Highway songs, of which only two could be reasonably called hits or semi-hits, yet you have whole albums of great songs thrown out to the kerb (or curb, if you're American or prefer the American spelling).

Cool to see "I'd Die For You" (though apparently not everyone is thrilled about Bobby Bandiera playing the solo) and "Dry County" in, and "The More Things Change" getting a few plays. Apparently someone threw a bottle at Jon just before "What Do You Got" but it didn't seem to dampen the concert.

Anyone at this show?

Videos: The More Things Change, This Is Love, Just Older from Pittsburgh

Who wants to see some Bon Jovi videos from night #2 in Pittsburgh (February 12, 2011)? They played two new songs, so you know what that means... Video Showcase Time. :)

The More Things Change / Lost Highway

"The More Things Change" is probably my favourite new track from the Greatest Hits and Ultimate Collection. It sounds decent for mine, though Jon looks as if he's concentrating too hard on the teleprompter too hard to really get into the song. But to be fair, there are actually quite a lot of lyrics in it, and I'm sure he'll get better with practise (hint, hint). Jon swapped over to a cool new Takamine guitar with a heart and dagger logo for "Lost Highway".

This Is Love, This Is Life

Not too bad, albeit not as powerful as the studio version which would have been difficult to replicate live, but I think it has promise as a live track. Hope they keep performing this and "The More Things Change" to iron out the kinks (and because, in my opinion, they are both superior songs to "What Do You Got" and "No Apologies").

Just Older

Bon Jovi opened with "Just Older" instead of "Blood on Blood" which makes for a nice switch. Jon also made a personal change, playing an electric guitar on the song.

Pittsburgh 2 set list

Now that's more like it! Bon Jovi's second night in Pittsburgh netted some nice changes, such as "Just Older", "Roses" and the live debut of "The More Things Change" and "This Is Love, This Is Life" (my favourite new Greatest Hits/Ultimate Collection tracks).

Welcome to the 2011 Tour

I'm not sure if Bon Jovi's 2011 live tour has an official name, but I guess it's safe to call it the Greatest Hits Tour. At any rate, here's the new concert intro, with the gold heart 'n' dagger and shots of the band and crowds replacing the blue Circle tunnel.

And here's a review of Bon Jovi's February 11 show from Scott Mervis for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
Maybe all that big hair obscured the charisma underneath, but when Bon Jovi first came around in the early '80s, no one figured him/them to be the No. 1 touring act in the world three decades later.

Clearly there's something to say for living on a prayer.

Friday night, Jon Bon Jovi and company kicked off the first of two nearly sold-out nights at Consol Energy Center to an adoring crowd with a two-plus hour set of beloved hits from the '80s and a sprinkling of new songs.

This Is Our House is the new NRL theme

I'm not a huge fan of "This Is Our House" personally, but it's proving popular as a sporting theme. Bon Jovi/Universal have licensed it to the National Rugby League in Australia:
THE NRL have pulled off one of the biggest advertising coups in Australian sports history by joining forces with global rock gods Bon Jovi for their 2011 campaign.

The US rockers have agreed to licence their song This Is Our House to the NRL for the next three years.

The first of the TV ads with the Bon Jovi tune will begin airing early next month.

University Park set list

Bon Jovi kicked off the 2011 tour at Penn State, more or less picking up where they left off. There was a webcast of the show, which I missed because I'm on the other side of the world and didn't expect anything special enough for me to put my life on hold for. ;)

Apparently Jon and Richie were both sick or "off" and it didn't make for a good show; I'm hearing and reading comments along the lines of "worst Bon Jovi show ever". But reviews from those who were either at the show or caught the livestream are always welcome.

Happy birthday Lema!

Happy birthday to our favourite keyboardist and composer, David Bryan Rashbaum! Born February 7, 1962, which makes him a young 49 years old.

Here's an old video of Dave playing "Runaway" with glam metal band Metal Skool (now known as Steel Panther).

JBJ's NFL aspirations

The latest on the rumour mill:
New Jersey rock star Jon Bon Jovi has been in confidential negotiations with Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank in which Bon Jovi would purchase 15 percent of the NFL franchise for $150 million, according to league sources.

Blank on Sunday morning acknowledged the talks but downplayed them as "discussions that are unlikely" to produce a partnership with Bon Jovi. He would not elaborate, except to add that he did not think it was newsworthy at this stage.
Maybe not newsworthy, but it's been doing the rounds on various websites so I figured it's worth blogging about at least. It's no secret that Jon would like to own an NFL team someday. Read the full article here.

No Apologies video

Apparently the music video for "No Apologies" is at this link but it's geoblocked so you may not be able to access it outside Germany. However, Youtube is your friend. ;)

The video appears to just be footage from Sydney edited together so it's not that remarkable but it could be worse.

JBJ & Friends Sayreville videos

A listing of videos from the Jon Bon Jovi and Friends gig at Starland Ballroom on January 27, 2011. Normally I would just showcase "rare" performances, but the whole show was pretty rare so I'll list instead of embedding.

The full setlist is here. Hope I got the details right... Someone comment and correct me if I messed anything up. The "Friends" at this show included Southside Johnny, Bob Bandiera, Bob Burger, Ricky Collins, Ray Anderson, Layonne Holmes, Lisa Bouchelle, Maureen McCrink.
